Back Then
36 years ago A subdivision serviced by Pahrump Valley's first water company announced a joint venture by Mel Grossman, a representative of Evans International homes and Pahrump developer-driller Ron Floyd. Shamrock Estates, with 205 lots, will be the site of a three-bedroom, $20,000 model home constructed by Evans International Homes. The effort to gain state funds to add to the county money for a Pahrump Valley high school has been turned back. About 70 students commute by bus to Death Valley High School. 30 years ago May 27, 1977, Pahrump Valley High School to graduate 36 seniors in the gym. Speaker for the ceremony will be Albert Hall. Mary Christensen, president of the county school board, will present the diplomas. A $1.2 million kidnap-ransom scheme, involving a Las Vegas banker and his wife, apparently included a successful pickup of the cash in the Calvada Inn parking lot in Pahrump. The banker, Reno Fruzza, and his wife, formerly known as performer Polly Possum, were taken captive in their home in Las Vegas. It is believed the money was taken from a Cadillac at the Calvada Inn parking lot to a small plane, then flown out of Pahrump Valley to a North Las Vegas airport. Fruzza and his wife survived the kidnapping. 20 years ago Kenneth Kolojay, a former part owner of the Shamrock brothel, won a $20,000 settlement over alleged violations of his civil rights by Nye County. Kolojay was arrested for supposedly delivering a woman to the brothel for the purposes of prostitution. The sheriff had no evidence of pandering. In fact, the person involved in the incident was someone other than Kolojay. Efforts to split Nye County at the line just South of Beatty are expected to continue, but it appears questionable that there is enough time in the legislative session to address such a complex issue. Valley Electric Association's board of directors discussed incentive power rates and other items, to attract business and light industry to the VEA distribution area. Board member Ken Tankersley said, "We have everything in our favor except commercial power" rates. 10 years ago U.S. Ecology, Beatty's most stable employer over the past 40 years, may be forced to shut down operations if Gov. Bob Miller doesn't step in and lower fees for storing hazardous waste. California lowered fees in January 1996, effectively disabling U.S. Ecology's ability to compete. A hospital for Pahrump is still the main goal for the Pahrump Community Hospital District board. "It is my desire to build Pahrump a hospital," said board member Jean Holveck. Unions get final offer, layoffs anticipated if Nye employees reject wage freeze proposal. In a move that put the issue squarely onto the shoulders of the employee unions, the county commissioners approved a budget proposal by Cameron McRae that would keep the number of workers constant through the coming fiscal year. Nye County optimistic after trip to Carson City to lobby for Pahrump high-tech learning center: If the legislature approves funding to build a high-tech learning center in Pahrump, it will be because of the efforts of a handful of PV high school students. According to Gary Hollis, town board member, "Those kids just knocked them dead. They (the legislators), didn't have a chance." |
