LAS VEGAS -- Most schools would be pleased to have one pole vaulter. Jerry Adcox, the Beatty High School track coach, has ... count 'em ... three. And all were eligible to compete in the Nevada Class A Track and Field Championships last weekend at Del Sol High School here.

"We had one last year, and he qualified for the state meet as well," said Adcox. "Now, we have three and they're all here."

And all three did reasonably well, considering their major adversary was Tim Nelson, from Pole Vault High School -- Smith Valley -- the winner with a 12-foot vault.

Among his Smith Valley predecessors was Jordan Savidge, who holds the state Class A record pole vault of 16 feet, set in 2005 at Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas. And the girls' champion is Kylee Gleason, who Friday cleared 11 feet, 8 inches, a state 1-A record.

Vaulting for Beatty were Chris Payton, who finished second at 10 feet; Cody Diehl, who hit 9-6, and Joe Serrano, who was fourth at 8-6. They combined for 19 of the 37 points compiled by the Nye County-based Hornets.

Beatty's boys were seventh, trailing champion Spring Mountain (88); Smith Valley (83), Las Vegas Calvary Chapel (61), Indian Springs (61), Reno Sage Ridge (50), and Las Vegas Trinity Christian (46).

Spring Mountain did not win an event, but the Eagles were 2-3-5 in the 110-meter high hurdles; second in the 100; third in the 200; added nine points in the 300 hurdles; were third in the 4x100 relay; second in the 4x200; second in the open 400; third in the 4x400; sixth in the 4x800; scored nine points in the shot put; had one in the 3200, and added six in the discus.

Sage Ridge may have finished third, but that Reno area team featured Nathan Chellman, who won the 800 in 1:59.22 and the 1600 in 4:24.76; both are 1-A state records, as is his 9:57.66 in winning the 3200.

Calvary Chapel, in its first track season, won state titles in the 4x100 (0:46.37), 4x200 (1:35.5) and the 4x400 (3:38.84) and was third in the 4x800 (9:35.23).

Round Mountain had 33 points, with Tonopah at 32, Pahranagat Valley Alamo 32, Sparks Excel Christian 27, Lund 27 1/2, Reno Sierra Lutheran 27, Carlin 22, Owyhee 12 1/2, Eureka 12, McDermitt 11, Austin 11, Jackpot 7, Pyramid Lake 5, Gabbs 4, and Wells 2.
