LAS VEGAS -- Despite a fantastic season that ended in Southern league and regional titles, the Pahrump Valley Trojans softball team was eliminated Friday from the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association-sanctioned Class 3-A Fast-Pitch Softball Championships at Faith Lutheran High School here.

After beating the Boulder City Eagles 7-6 in extra innings earlier that day, the Trojans fell to the Winnemucca Lowry Buckaroos 5-2. The PV girls finished 23-23, after a 0-9 start. They were 13-3 in the league and went 3-0 in the regionals to advance to the state tournament.

Junior righthander Ashleah Barney had six strikeouts and had a run batted in, but performances from Lowry's Christal Herrera and Angela Dennis proved a bit too much to overcome.

Herrera had a double, two RBI and a pair of stolen bases, while Dennis recorded a double, an RBI and a run for the Buckaroos.

The Trojans' bats were far more productive against the Eagles.

Tayler Raymer went 4-for-5, including two doubles, a triple and three runs. Christina Rodriguez had a run, while Christina and Rebecca Gamble each recorded a double. Christina Gamble also recorded an RBI.

Fernley won the championship, beating Pahrump Valley 10-2, Lowry 3-2 and the Buckaroos again, 10-2, in the title game.

Severena Johnson, a sophomore, slugged a three-run homer in the fourth inning of the game against Pahrump Valley to break a 2-2 tie. Against Lowry, her homer was the deciding hit in that victory. Against Lowry in the title game, 6-foot-2 righthander Heather Matthews, the winning pitcher against Pahrump Valley, had a perfect game for five innings.

Boulder City was 0-2 in the tournament, bowing 6-0 to Lowry and 7-6 in nine innings to Pahrump Valley.

Pahrump Valley was 0-2 in the 2002 state tournament, played at Mesquite. In 2003, 2004 and 2005, the Lady Trojans won state championships, going 3-1 at Boulder City, 3-0 in Reno, and 3-0 at Mesquite. They did not qualify for the 2006 state tournament, won by Lowry.

Lauver completed five years as the Trojans' coach; he has a career record of 129-68, with three championships in four state tournament appearances. The PV girls are 10-3 in state tournament games, 22-4 in all post-season contests.

On the PV roster for the post-season were seniors, outfielder Abi Gill, third baseman Michelle Dannenberger, and Angelica Villa, who was the starting pitcher in the Trojans' victory against Boulder City; juniors Emily Poertner, Shandy Malic, Lindsay Cummings, Christina Rodriguez, Tori Thomas, Christine Gamble, Chelsea Cochrell, and Ashleah Barney; sophomores Karen Daun, Shayna Smith and Arlette Scott, and freshmen Rachel Hartwick, Rebecca Gamble, Taylor Raymer and Destani Codera.
