Griffin proceeds with new counsel

William Edward Griffin, 72, pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of lewdness with a child under 14 in Fifth District Court last Tuesday.

He is scheduled to go to trial July 24.

If convicted, Griffin could be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

In addition, a state's motion to set bail for Griffin was denied by Judge Robert Lane. He will remain at liberty on his own recognizance.

This was the third time Griffin appeared in court due to his unwillingness to accept a plea agreement that had been reached with the state.

Instead, Griffin has chosen to go to trial, and this time with a new lawyer, Chip Siegel.

In response to the state's motion to set bail, Siegel submitted a document signed by approximately 75 people stating Griffin was not a danger to the community.

Also, the lawyer said he would file a written motion to have the case remanded back to justice court for a new preliminary hearing.

Griffin previously unconditionally waived his right to a preliminary hearing, and a request to have the case remanded by his last lawyer was denied.
