ROTARY INVITATIONAL HERE FRIDAY PV boys dominate Vegas meet
By DON McDERMOTT
LAS VEGAS -- Neither the impressive victory by the boys nor the relatively close loss by the girls drew any major reaction from Jason Odegard, the coach of the Pahrump Valley High School track team. "Most teams were missing some people," said Odegard, after the PVHS boys won easily, scoring 203 points to 106.5 for host Faith Lutheran. Pahrump Valley boys won with 203 points, well ahead of the host Crusaders (106.5). Boulder City had 97, Spring Mountain 51, Lincoln County 45, Ely White Pine 43.5, Round Mountain 25, Tonopah 22, Las Vegas The Meadows 19, Indian Springs 18, Pahranagat Valley Alamo 18, Las Vegas Calvary Chapel (in its first-ever track meet) 15, Lund 14, Beatty 11, Wells 6, Eureka 2 and Laughlin 0. In the girls standings, Boulder City had 166.5 points, with the Lady Trojans at 132.5. Faith Lutheran had 115, Laughlin 81, Round Mountain 36, Wells 30, The Meadows 28, Lund 24, Tonopah 24, White Pine 22, Beatty 13, Indian Springs 13, Calvary Chapel 7, Lincoln County 2, Eureka 1 and Alamo 0. Pahrump Valley's boys swept the sprints, with Rocky Spencer winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 0:11.77 and 0:23.49, respectively, and Sergio Castro taking the 400 in 0:53.22. The 4x400 relay team of Ande Floyd, Castro, James Lucas and Eric Lau Rodriguez won the 4x400 in 3:51.42. Kyle Mills swept the long jump (19 feet, 8 inches) and triple jump (41-3 1/2). Steve Cummings was first in the shot put (42-2 1/2) and Reynaldo Veloz won the discus (133-4). Jeremiah Ward won the high jump (6-feet) and James Chapman was first in the pole vault at 12 feet. For the girls, McKenzie Dean won the 800 (2:27.4), 1600 (5:21.8) and 3200 (12:16.8). Dean, who edged nemesis Katie Palmer of Boulder City (5:21.8 to 5:22.3) in the 1600, was placed in the slow heat for the 800 because it was the first time she had competed in that event this spring. Had Dean been in the fast heat, the PVHS sophomore would have won by 14 seconds. Casey Burtenshaw won the 200 (0:27.57) and was on the 4x100 quartet that won in 0:53.76. Carrie Musick, Bethany Jackson and Tee Tee Hughes were on that team. Alexis Abou-Halaka won the shot put with a heave of 31 feet, 10 inches. Ashley Rencher was third at 31-1/2. Beatty, with coach Bruce Moen in charge, had more than 20 boys and girls compete. Round Mountain and Tonopah had a major presence as well, with the Knights' Tyrell Akers outrunning the Muckers' Kevin McElroy in the 800 (2:11.5 to 2:20.10). Katie Redman of Round Mountain won the triple jump at 31 feet. |
