PREP BASEBALL Beatty inconsistent in splitting four gamesPVT
Brian Hayes was not a happy coach after Beatty High School's baseball team went 2-2 in the Mountain View Christian tournament at Las Vegas last weekend. "It was a disappointing weekend overall," said Hayes. "I expected to come out and win this tournament; we were the better team. "It was just a matter of the kids coming out and wanting to be the best team on the field." The Hornets defeated Spring Mountain 14-2, but lost 10-6 to Mountain View and 8-5 to Fredonia, Ariz., before stopping Spring Mountain again, 11-6. "Our pitching will be tough to beat if our defense can make the routine play consistently," said Hayes. The Hornets committed eight errors in the two losses. Among the Beatty standouts was Eddie Maldonado, who was 8-for-14 with five doubles and nine runs batted in. Catcher Jacob Sumpter threw out three of five runners trying to steal. Kyle Marchand pitched a four-hitter to win the first Spring Mountain game; he struck out seven and allowed two earned runs. The Hornets had 11 hits, including two each by Tony Heilman and Maldonado. A seven-run fifth inning vaulted Mountain View past Beatty in the second game, after the Hornets had taken a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Heilman took the loss in relief of Maldonado. Sumpter and Heilman had two hits each. Against Fredonia, Beatty was victimized again by a big inning. The Arizona team scored five runs in the fourth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Matt Everts was the losing pitcher, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Everts slugged a homer and had two RBI. In the second win against Spring Mountain, the Hornets scored all of their runs in the first three innings. Maldonado went 4-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Byron Gray was 2-for-2. "As soon as we get Matt (Everts), Jesus (Moreno) and Gray rolling with the bats, we will be tough to stop offensively," said Hayes. The Hornets play a doubleheader against Las Vegas Trinity Christian Tuesday. Friday, Beatty opens Nevada Class A Central Division competition with a doubleheader at Tonopah. The first game begins at 1 p.m. Results of Beatty softball games were not reported. |
