Youth employment, training services

GNJ Family Life Center is offering employment and training-related services to youth ages 14 through 21. These services include tutorials, job placement assistance, GED preparation, high school proficiency tutorials and more.

To determine eligibility, individuals should bring their Social Security card and a copy of their birth certificate.

High Desert Shorts film festival

Local artists are invited to come up with a poster to be used in advertising the second annual High Desert Shorts International Film Festival, which will be held Sept. 28-30 at the Pahrump Nugget.

The winner of the poster contest will receive $25, complimentary entrance to all HSDIFF events and be credited on all advertising and promotion and on the Web site.

Poster entries may be delivered to KPVM Channel 41 studios, 890 S. Higley or to the Pahrump Arts Council office, 2340 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite B.

All entries must be clearly labeled on the back with artist's name and contact information.

The deadline for submission is April 27.

VEA offering scholarships

Valley Electric Association is again offering $500 scholarships to three high school seniors who live in VEA's electric service area and who will graduate in spring 2007.

Unlike most scholarships, VEA winners are not chosen based directly on their grades or academic standing, but grades do matter. The VEA scholarship winners will be chosen at random at the non-profit cooperative's annual full membership meeting in April.

Forms are available by calling the VEA main office in Pahrump at 727-5312 or 800-742-3330; from guidance counselors at high schools in Pahrump, Beatty, Tonopah and Sandy Valley; and online at www.valleyelectric.org.

Widows support group

Parrot society

The High Desert Parrot Society is an organization in the planning stages and is seeking those who can be involved in the startup of this very important project. The first meeting was held last week and a second meeting is planned for later this month.

Lenten services

Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, located at 650 S. Blagg (between Highway 372 and Wilson Road) will hold a series of services during Lent.

Lenten Worship services will be held today, March 21 and 28. Palm Sunday services presenting a musical, "The Offer Still Stands," will be held at 5 p.m. March 31 and at 9:30 a.m. April 1. On Maundy Thursday, a Communion service will be held at 7 p.m. April 5. Easter Services will be held at 5 p.m. April 7 and at 9:30 a.m. April 8.

St. Patrick's Day celebration

United Way will hold a St. Patrick's Day celebration from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Petrack Park.

A parade will start at 11:30 a.m. from Manse Elementary School to Petrack Park, followed by a corned beef and cabbage dinner.

Aglow meeting

Aglow International of Pahrump will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Water From the Rock Church, 1370 E. Matthews Lane (across from Smith's).

The meeting of the American Association of University Women has been postponed due to an accident involving Maureen Sherwood, chapter president. The AAUW will meet at 1 p.m. Monday.

Council of the Blind meeting

The Pahrump Valley Chapter of the Nevada Council of the Blind will hold its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Pahrump Senior Center.

Blind or low-vision individuals are invited to come to the meeting for information on diseases that affect vision, such as diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Therapy and vision aids will also be discussed.

Homeschool bowling league

The Pahrump Homeschool Bowling League will begin its spring bowling season at 9 a.m. March 21.

The league is open to homeschooled children ages 3 to 17 with parental consent and will be eight weeks long. The cost is $52 per child, which includes bowling two games per week, shoe rental and a pizza party and a trophy ceremony on the last day. Every bowler will receive a trophy and possibly other prizes.

M.S. golf tournament

The third annual Classic Multiple Sclerosis Golf Tournament, to fund research and promote awareness of M.S., will be held March 31 at Lakeview Executive Golf Course, 1471 Mt. Charleston Drive.

The tournament will be a four person Better Ball Scramble and played in two flights of 72 golfers; one at 8:30 a.m. and one at noon. The tournament entry fee is $40 per player, which includes golf, lunch and prizes.

Entertainment will be provided throughout the afternoon. Raffle winners will be drawn, starting at 3:30 p.m., with tourney winners announced immediately after the raffle drawings.

Methodist church Easter services

Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will have a traditional Palm Sunday service at 10 a.m. April 1; a Seder Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. April 5; an evening service featuring Holy Communion and The Stations of the Cross will begin at 7 p.m. April 5.; and a service of mediation on the Seven Last Words of Christ will be held at noon April 6.

On Easter morning, a special worship service will be held at 10 a.m April 6. The church is located at 1300 E. Highway 372.

No cost hearing clinic

Pahrump Elks Lodge No. 2796 will have a free hearing clinic (screening) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 22 at 2280 E. Basin Ave. (one mile past the DMV).

Each appointment takes approximately 15 minutes and will be conducted by Mary Haase from the Pahrump Hearing Center.

Elks installation of officers

Nathan Adelson Hospice is sponsoring the third annual Senior Resource Carnival, to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

This year's theme is "Spring into Action, Learn what Pahrump has to offer." More than 30 organizations will be represented at the event to introduce senior citizens in Pahrump to the various resources available to them.
