High Desert Shorts film festival Local artists are invited to come up with a poster to be used in advertising the second annual High Desert Shorts International Film Festival, which will be held Sept. 28-30 at the Pahrump Nugget. The winner of the poster contest will receive $25, complimentary entrance to all HSDIFF events and be credited on all advertising and promotion and on the Web site. Poster entries may be delivered to KPVM Channel 41 studios, 890 S. Higley or to the Pahrump Arts Council office, 2340 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite B. All entries must be clearly labeled on the back with artist's name and contact information. The deadline for submission is April 27. VEA offering scholarships Valley Electric Association is again offering $500 scholarships to three high school seniors who live in VEA's electric service area and who will graduate in spring 2007. Unlike most scholarships, VEA winners are not chosen based directly on their grades or academic standing, but grades do matter. The VEA scholarship winners will be chosen at random at the non-profit cooperative's annual full membership meeting in April. Forms are available by calling the VEA main office in Pahrump at 727-5312 or 800-742-3330; from guidance counselors at high schools in Pahrump, Beatty, Tonopah and Sandy Valley; and online at www.valleyelectric.org. Parrot society The High Desert Parrot Society is an organization in the planning stages and is seeking those who can be involved in the startup of this very important project. Council of the Blind meeting The Pahrump Valley Chapter of the Nevada Council of the Blind will hold its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Pahrump Senior Center. Blind or low-vision individuals are invited to come to the meeting for information on diseases that affect vision, such as diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Homeschool bowling league The Pahrump Homeschool Bowling League will begin its spring bowling season at 9 a.m. March 21. The league is open to homeschooled children ages 3 to 17 with parental consent and will be eight weeks long. The cost is $52 per child, which includes bowling two games per week, shoe rental and a pizza party and a trophy ceremony on the last day. Every bowler will receive a trophy and possibly other prizes. Sign ups are being taken now through Monday at noon. M.S. golf tournament The third annual Classic Multiple Sclerosis Golf Tournament, to fund research and promote awareness of M.S., will be held March 31 at Lakeview Executive Golf Course, 1471 Mt. Charleston Drive. The tournament will be a four person Better Ball Scramble and played in two flights of 72 golfers; one at 8:30 a.m. and one at noon. The tournament entry fee is $40 per player, which includes golf, lunch and prizes. Entertainment will be provided throughout the afternoon.
