The Nye County School District Board of Trustees conducted their regular meeting in a new setting last Thursday when the board traveled down to Amargosa and got to business at the home of the Amargosa Sandblasters.

A variety of business was conducted at the meeting, including the board's sharing several pieces of cheerful mail it received from schools around the county and giving out a number recognitions and awards.

The board received a letter from students at Hafen Elementary school for its approval of funding musical equipment for the school.

The board approved funding of up to $155,000, for all Nye County school music programs at a meeting last January.

The funding comes from the interest of the Educational Endowment Act.

Chairman Dennis Keating read aloud a letter from Dr. Terry Owens, principal of Hafen Elementary school, which thanked the board for the allocation.

"We are thrilled and honored by your decision to fund music supplies and equipment at Hafen Elementary and other schools," the letter read.

"When the approval notice was received, I read it to Mrs. (DeAnna) Pomije and her fellow teachers to cheers and applause... This is the first time in Mrs. Pomije's memory that we have received such a generous allocation specifically for music."

The letter gave a long list of the new supplies that the music teacher acquired thanks to the funding, from mallets to a mettalophone and even a keyboard.

The board also received a thank you card in a brightly decorated manila envelope from the kindergarten class at Round Mountain Elementary School, thanking it for approving the funding for new housing for their teachers.

The class also gave a house-shaped tissue box as a token of their appreciation that Keating promised would go with the board to all their meetings around the county.

Four teachers received Service Awards for their continued work for the school district.

Richard Stephens of Beatty High School was honored for 30 years of service. Gary Tortenson of Beatty Elementary and Middle School also received a certificate for 30 years of teaching. Vern Nelson, also of Beatty Elementary and Middle School, was awarded for 25 years of teaching. Lynn Jordan from Amargosa Valley School received a certificate for her 25 years of molding young minds as well.

Bob Whimpey, head of maintenance and operations for the school district, addressed the board and told them he and Superintendent Dr. Rob Roberts were presented with an award for being a finalist in the Cashman Good Government Award for the district's efforts in conservation.
