Lakeview executive course NCC plans Glo-Ball tourney
By MARY BALDASANO
The Nye Communities Coalition (NCC) held its regional meeting Feb. 21 at the Community Center in Beatty. The mission of the coalition is to use grant funds as well as those from fundraising events to fund programs focusing on domestic violence, teen violence, child abuse, alcohol and tobacco abuse, educational efforts, and other activities such as the Boys and Girls Club. With that in mind, on April 1, an unusual Glo-Ball golf tournament will be held at the Lakeview Executive Course at 1471 Mount Charleston Drive. The game will challenge golfers to play nine holes in daylight and nine holes after dark using Glo Balls to light holes and tee areas as well as pre-determined spots along the fairways. A charge of $30 per person will include a dinner, and golfers are asked to dress "wild and funny." The funds raised will be used for many of the coalition's programs. Coalition members are requested to donate items for a raffle to be held during the tournament. The tournament was the brain child of Stacy Smith, coalition director. She had developed the idea for a family event and since it turned out well, decided to use it as a fundraiser. Since there are a lot of golfers in the area, she hopes they will accept the challenge. The tournament is for anyone who wants to play golf, not just experienced players. There will be many prizes for this alcohol-, tobacco- and drug-free event. The coalition is asking businesses and others to sponsor a tee at $50 each or be platinum ($100) or corporate ($500) sponsors. Corporate sponsor prices include a foursome. Volunteers are requested to help out with the event by directing golfers after dark and bringing them water, etc. "We hope a lot of golfers will participate in the event," Smith said. "The funds raised will be equally distributed to a lot of programs. This is an intergenerational event that is a lot of fun." Currently, the Nevada Federal Credit Union is a platinum sponsor -- the first to sign up. Tee sponsors include the Valley Electric Association, Mrs. Clause Closet, United Way and Pahrump Valley Pumps. Applications for the tournament can be picked up at the coalition office at 2280 East Calvada Blvd., Suite 103. Other events will also be held in the coming year to raise funds for the various local programs funded by the coalition to help those in the Pahrump community. In cooperation with the NCC, the United Way of Pahrump will hold its annual St. Patrick's Day parade on Saturday, March 17. The parade will start at Manse Elementary School and finish at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Those wishing to partake of the dinner must pay $6. At the June 20 regional meeting, the coalition will plan a camp out for the group to discuss future fundraising events as well as appropriate distribution of funds from all sources to benefit No to Abuse, Westcare, Even Start, school district, and others. Other issues will also be reviewed. Members will pay a fee to participate. For more information regarding the golf tournament call the NCC at 775-727-9970; for the parade and dinner call the United Way at 775-751-2400. |
