TOUGH SCHEDULE LOOMS Legion rallies to win Silver Division game
By DON McDERMOTT
After falling behind 5-1, the Pahrump Valley American Legion Post 22 baseball team charged back to win 11-7 against Henderson Liberty in a Silver Division game Wednesday at Honeysuckle Park. The Trojans swept the twin bill from the Patriots, getting strong relief pitching from Brandon Uyeno down the stretch to win the nightcap, 5-4. Pahrump Valley moved to 4-2 in the division, while Liberty is 7-3; Thursday, the Trojans played Las Vegas Palo Verde, 4-2, and homestanding Faith Lutheran, 9-1, in a division doubleheader. While manager Jim McHugh was pleased with the victory, he is more concerned about how the Trojans will perform in the final month of the regular season. Starting July 6, the Trojans play 12 games in seven days. They go to Sierra Vista for a doubleheader July 6; to Rivera Park in Las Vegas July 7 to take on Western and Rancho; to Centennial July 9 to battle Shadow Ridge and the Bulldogs, and to Vo-Tech July 10 to face Chaparral and Vo-Tech. On July 11, the Trojans are at home against Del Sol, and on July 12, they are back on the road to face Desert Pines and Eldorado at Eldorado. "No one, not even major league teams, play a schedule like that," said McHugh, and voicing a legitimate concern: "Where do we get the pitchers who can work a schedule like that?" Wednesday, righthander Cody Nielsen worked six solid innings to get the win, with lefthander Dax Duesing getting the save. Lefthander Tyrell Smith was at first base, and righthander Alex Bietar was at shortstop; they both have extensive pitching experience in the PVHS system. But 12 games in a week would be a grind for any pitching staff, regardless of how many hurlers are available. And that is what concerns McHugh. Against Liberty, key hits by Nielsen and Iggy Wagner, as well as sloppy defensive plays by the Patriots in the fifth and sixth innings proved decisive. Duesing got out of a seventh-inning jam to preserve the win. In the Nevada District 4 9-10 All-Star Tournament at Seastrand Park in Las Vegas Wednesday, Pahrump No. 1 lost 7-0 to Lone Mountain Blue, 7-0. Pahrump No. 2 played Summerlin North Thursday. Pahrump No. 1 is in the losers' bracket and will return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday on East Field in the park. |
