Until leagues are established, no changes for the playoffs

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association tabled a proposal to change the format for state tournaments, until all league memberships have been established.

Several schools, including Pahrump Valley, intend to petition for a change in their classification assignment that would become effective in fall 2008. Pahrump Valley has been assigned to the Class 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division. The school plans to file a petition for change by the Aug. 13 deadline.

The proposed changes in state tournaments were to increase the number of teams that qualify for post-season games. In basketball, the proposal was to have eight teams in each class compete in the state tournaments; they are now at four teams.

Baseball, fast-pitch softball, volleyball, and boys and girls soccer also have four teams advance to a state tournament.

In Class A football, eight teams qualify for first-round games and in Class 3-A, both the Southern and Northern Leagues have their top four teams advance to regional playoff games before cross-pairings start.

In 2006, Mesquite Virgin Valley and Overton Moapa Valley, played for the state 3-A championship, after beating Northern teams in the semifinals.
