Relay for Life Applications for walkers and donations for the relay team will be taken after Masses July 7 and 8 at Our Lady of the Valley Church on Gamebird. Chances will be available for five handmade afghans ($1). The Angels in the Outfield team will also be selling luminary bags for $10 to be placed in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of those who have lost the battle against cancer at the Aug. 18 Relay candle lighting ceremony. Prescription meds assistance Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance. Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies. Pick up cards at pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, located at 250 N. Highway 160, Ste. 4, or call 751-7095. Exchange students NWS Peace Program, a non-profit and CSIET-approved program, is looking for 10 caring families in the area to host high school students from Mongolia, Japan, Belgium, France and other countries. The students are 15 to 18 years of age and will begin arriving in August, staying five to 10 months, attending local high schools. They speak English, have medical insurance and their own spending money. Single parents, retirees and those who have small children, teens or no children are eligible to be host families. Celebrate the '60s Nathan Adelson Hospice will hold the third annual Blue Butterfly Coffee House, an event celebrating the '60s, Saturday in the event center at the Pahrump Nugget. Exchange students host homes needed DM Discoveries, a government-monitored exchange student program, is seeking host families in Nye County and the surrounding areas for foreign exchange students due to arrive in August for the 2007-08 school year. Each student has full medical coverage, pocket money and has expressed a true desire to become a participating member of an American family - pitching in on everything from household chores to family discussions. Relay for Life fundraiser The Pahrump Relay for Life team, "Breakfast at Tiffany's," will hold an omelet in a bag breakfast, along with juice, coffee and toast, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 15 at the Bob Ruud Community Center. The cost is $3 for one or two for $5. A yard sale will also be going on at the same time. This is to help raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, which will be held Aug. 18 and 19 at Petrack Park. Caregiver training Nathan Adelson Hospice will provide a two-day workshop teaching individuals to be caregivers in a home/hospice or health care/nursing home environment, starting at 8:30 a.m. July 16 and 17 in the conference room at the hospice, 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900. Space is limited for this no-cost 16 hour training. Reservations must be made no later than July 12. Hospice fundraiser Nathan Adelson Hospice (NAH) will host its 13th annual Serenades of Life, a physician's benefit concert, at 7 p.m. July 28 at the Flamingo Library Theatre, 1401 E. Flamingo Road in Las Vegas. Many local doctors, members of the medical community and friends will lend their musical talents to help raise funds for the hospice. Rosemary Clarke enrollment Rosemary Clarke Middle School will re-open July 31. Enrollment dates will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 31 for the sixth grade; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 1 for the seventh grade; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2 for the eighth grade. Quilts 4 Cancer Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501C3 charity, needs financial sponsors. Funding is needed to continue giving cancer comfort quilts to those in the area (not Las Vegas). In Nye and Esmeralda County, so many residents are being treated for cancer. Bible school registration The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church is now accepting registration for vacation Bible school, which will be held July 23-27 for children age 3 through the sixth grade.
