IN BRIEFHosts sought for exchange students NW Services, a non-profit and CSIET-approved program, is looking for caring families in the area to host high school students from Mongolia, Japan, Belgium, France and other countries. The students are 15 to 18 years of age and will begin arriving in August, staying five to 10 months, attending local high schools. Quarter Horse Ave. (off Thousandaire). Cats and kittens are $36 each and dogs and puppies are $64 each. Adult literacy The Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St., offers free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to adults who struggle with reading. The Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), sponsored by the Small Business Administration, is available now to help put your plans to work. Located at the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce offices in the Nevada State Bank building at 1301 S. Highway 160, SCORE provides confidential free one-on-one counseling and assists in finding money or funding sources including business plan, marketing, break-even point, management guidance and all other features -- all at no charge. Free drug tests Teen Care provides free drug tests for the children of concerned parents and guardians. The test detects marijuana, cocaine, meth, opiates, amphetamines and more. In addition, tutors are needed for language arts in the areas of grammar and vocabulary. A willingness to work with middle- to high school-aged students is a must. The arrival of the Nevada Business Express bus in Pahrump wasn't very smooth last week. Homeland Heroes dinner Homeland Heroes will have a dinner from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the VFW, 4651 S. Homestead. The price is $6 for a menu that will include beef brisket, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, salad and a dinner roll. Bible school registration The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church is now accepting registration for vacation Bible school, which will be held July 23-27 for children age 3 through the sixth grade. Celebrate the '60s Nathan Adelson Hospice will hold the third annual Blue Butterfly Coffee House, an event celebrating the '60s, Saturday in the event center at the Pahrump Nugget. Caregiver training Nathan Adelson Hospice will provide a two-day workshop teaching individuals to be caregivers in a home/hospice or health care/nursing home environment, starting at 8:30 a.m. July 16 and 17 in the conference room at the hospice, 1480 E. Enrollment dates will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 31 for the sixth grade; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 1 for the seventh grade; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2 for the eighth grade. Giant pumpkin contest The deadline to enter the second annual Giant Pumpkin Contest, sponsored by the Pahrump Master Gardeners, is 5 p.m. Aug. 1. The contest is open to all resident living in the Pahrump Valley School District. First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded in three categories; age 7 and under, 8-18 and age 19 and over. The heaviest pumpkin among all entrants will be awarded the grand prize ribbon. Weigh-in will be held Oct. 3 at the Master Gardener booth between noon and 8 p.m. at Petrack Park, Highway 160 and Basin. Pumpkins will be on display during the Fall Festival. Prescription meds assistance Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance. Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies. Pick up cards at pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, located at 250 N. Highway 160, Ste. 4, or call 751-7095. Wall of Heroes Those who would like a military photo of a loved one to hang in S.S.I.'s new military museum and gallery at Chief Tecopa Cemetery may submit photos to Awards Plus at 1231 E. Basin.
