Sports DigestMatsui wins in junior golf Nicole Matsui shot a 52 to win the girls 7-8 division of a Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association tournament played Monday at the Executive course. A total of 21 boys and girls competed on a hot day in the valley. Lucas Tretjen had 41 to win the boys' 7-8 tournament. Jasper Biggs, a member of the Pahrump Valley High School girls' golf team, had 39-35--74 to win the girls 15-18 division. William Peers had 33-36--69 to win the boys' 15-18 title. In other boys' 15-18 results, Shane Lindemann had 38-33--71, with Isaac Shook at 48-43--91. Chance Walker had 46, Sean Miskiewicz 48 and Anthony Blodgett 49 in boys 7-8. Shelby Brown and Aubrey Erickson shot 54s. Also competing were Courtney Jersic, Aledx Milliron, Emily Ursprung, Nick Harris, Dakota Jersic, Craig Moore, Devon Ronnow, Kane Woodworth, Marc Worden and Connor Ursprung. Hopkins enter Seniors event Hoppy and Carolyn Hopkins of Pahrump will play in the World Series of Poker Seniors Tournament Monday at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino, with the $1,000 buy-in tournament starting at noon. Hoppy Hopkins, playing in a private game, won a $10,000 seat to compete in the WSOP Main Event, which starts July 6 and ends July 17 at the Rio. Hopkins will begin first-round play on July 8 in the tournament, which is expected to attract more than 7,000 players and generate a prize pool in excess of $70 million. The WSOP Media-Celebrity Free Roll tournament will be played July 5, starting at 10 a.m. in the Rio poker room. Times sports editor Don McDermott will play in that tournament, which offers more than $13,000 in prizes to be awarded to charity. McDermott will play for the Nye County School District, with the money to be earmarked for athletic programs. First place is $10,000. Fall sign-ups slated at PVHS All Pahrump Valley High School student-athletes must have a physical examination every year. So, the following information, provided by the PVHS athletics department, is key to any prospective Trojan athlete intending to compete in fall 2007. To participate in high school athletics, boys and girls must have: Appropriate physical examination/registration on file in the PVHS athletics department; physical examinations must be done by licensed physicians, not chiropractors; Health insurance coverage; a student may purchase coverage through the school if he or she is not already insured. Forms will not be available until July 2. Important dates to remember are: July 2, physical and registration forms will be available in the PVHS main office; summer hours will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Aug. 1, early registration will be held from noon to 8 p.m. in the PVHS athletics office; enter through the main front doors. Student-athletes should bring their completed physical examination and registration forms. Aug. 8, final registration will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Again, completed forms should be presented. Aug. 9, first day of football practice. Aug. 13, first day of practice for boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country, volleyball, and girls golf. At 3-1 were Darrell Strain, Gary Barcus, Sherry Dalton, Karen Riggers, Chuck Boyd and Jeff Jesomonski. Arnie's No. 1 leads the Pahrump Valley 8-Ball League with a 16-6 record. At 14-8 is Town Hall No. 3, with Town Hall No. 2 and Town Hall No. 1 both at 13-7. Our Bar No. 6 Pros is at 6-14, with Our Bar No. 5 Cons 0-20. Sharks' football to start Aug. 9 The Rosemary Clarke Middle School football season will begin with registration Aug. 9 at 6 p.m. in the school gym. Student-athletes must bring a completed physical examination form, proof of insurance and $50 in cash or a money order to cover fees. Practice begins Aug. 13.
