Drunken boaters to be targetedSPECIAL TO THE PVT
An Operating Under the Influence checkpoint has been slated for sometime this weekend on Lake Mead. This multi-agency operation will involve officers from the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the National Park Service and the Arizona Game & Fish Department. "OUI is the boating equivalent of DUI on the road," explained David Pfiffner, supervising game warden for NDOW. "Boaters with a breath or blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent or higher will be arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas." OUI checkpoints are one way of physically removing drunken boaters from Nevada waters. They are also a powerful way of educating boaters that Nevada and Arizona are serious about enforcing OUI laws. The checkpoint is designed to be as brief and unobtrusive as possible. In addition to checking for OUI, officers are also checking for safety violations, and boaters can expect citations for failure to carry the required safety equipment. During a similar checkpoint held earlier this summer on Lake Mohave, 177 vessels were checked resulting in six arrests and more than 70 citations written. |
