FISHING
EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Fishing has been very good for those who are willing to keep after it. A 2 1/2-pound brown trout took a worm offered by a little boy who was fishing from the boat dock. Perhaps the biggest surprise in some time is the 4 1/4-pound largemouth bass that was reportedly hauled out of the lake on Tuesday. If that's true, there is an armchair fisheries biologist at work. If so, that could eventually threaten the trout fishery. Go with worms and PowerBait for trout. Fly-fishermen may want to try an olive or brown woolly bugger fished along the reed beds. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR Free Fishing Day had the anglers working the water for largemouth bass, crappie and trout on this small reservoir. Daytime temperatures are a little warmer here than at Eagle Valley. Fish the cooler times of the day, early morning and late afternoon and evening. Fish the structure for bass and crappies. Try rainbow PowerBait or worms for trout and spinners or plastic baits for bass. If the crappie are still hitting, try small crappie jigs or a Gitzit. LAKE MEAD Winds have held anglers at bay for much of the past week and have made fishing difficult. Some striper fishermen have found top-water action, but most of the fish caught have been taken on bait. Stripers have been seen chasing shad to the surface. The key is a willingness to work for the fish; passive anglers will find the going slow. Fishermen have been finding bucket mouths in the backs of coves and smallies off the points. Plastic worms and crankbaits have been taking the fish. LAKE MOHAVE Anglers were out in low numbers last weekend and action continues to be slow. Anglers have found some success for catfish and stripers, though there is no word of anything very big. No report for Willow Beach. WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA Rainbow trout and largemouth bass are still hitting at Cold Springs and Haymeadow. An hour is all it took for one boater to limit out on rainbows while another reportedly caught and released 35 bass in a day of fishing. Action at Adams-McGill has slowed considerably, but may still be worth trying. Trout anglers have been doing well with PowerBait, small spinners, worms and flies. Some boaters have been doing well by trolling Mepp's Spinners. URBAN PONDS Catfish have been stocked into the urban ponds but reports are that fishing is slow. For whiskerfish, think simple and back to basics - try worms, stink baits or chicken livers. The Nevada Department of Wildlife is planning on another catfish plant at all five of the urban ponds toward the end of the month. |
