Girl Scouts unite

Girl Scout Troop 526 of Palmdale, Calif. is sponsoring a "Support our Troop" fund raiser in Pahrump.

Girl Scout troops throughout Pahrump graciously and without hesitation have agreed to join us in this fund raiser.

We will be holding a white elephant sale and car wash.

The June class schedule for Family to Family Connection, located at 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Monday -- Nevada check up and Medicaid application assistance, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuesday -- Teen parenting, 2 p.m.

June 21 -- Family vehicle safety program, 3:45 p.m.

June 22 -- Nevada Early Intervention Services explore and learn play group, 11 a.m.

June 29 -- Pediatric first aid, 1 p.m.

Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Playgroup is at 1 p.m. every Thursday.

Red Hat fundraiser

The "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" Chapter of the Red Hats is sponsoring a fund raiser for the Pahrump Valley Museum. A luncheon is scheduled for June 20th at the Elks Club. Tickets are sold out but donations for the Pahrump Valley Museum are still requested.

New animal organization

SNAPS has been created in Pahrump as a solution to stop the killing of unwanted animals and offers low or no cost vaccinations, spaying and neutering of cats and dogs and humane traps.

SNAPS' next vaccination clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 23 at the Comstock Park pool house.

Amateur radio raffle

Southern Nye County Amateur Radio Emergency Service Inc., is hosting a raffle to raise funds for the group.

Prizes include: One $100 gift certificate at Smith's Grocery, one $50 gift certificate at Smith's Grocery, one $50 gift certificate at Wal-Mart, a free car wash at Carbucks and assorted hand-made gifts donated by club members.

Winners will be notified by phone and do not need to be present in order to win. The drawing will be June 24 at 11 a.m. during the ARRL "field day," which is scheduled the weekend of June 23 and 24 in the parking lot of the Pahrump Nugget Hotel & Casino.

United Way golf tournament

The Jerome Pollock Memorial Golf Tournament will be held June 24 at Mountain Falls Golf Club.

Celebrate the '60s

Nathan Adelson Hospice will hold the third annual Blue Butterfly Coffee House, an event celebrating the '60s, June 30 in the event center at the Pahrump Nugget.

Enjoy an evening of folk songs, food, coffee, a no-host bar, raffles, comedy, bongo drums and more. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the curtain goes up at 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 each or two for $25.

Tutors needed for Pathways

The Pathways program needs tutors in mathematics. In addition, tutors are needed for language arts in the areas of grammar and vocabulary.

A willingness to work with middle- to high school-aged students is a must.

Hosts sought for exchange students

NW Services, a non-profit and CSIET-approved program, is looking for caring families in the area to host high school students from Mongolia, Japan, Belgium, France and other countries.

The students are 15 to 18 years of age and will begin arriving in August, staying five to 10 months, attending local high schools. They speak English, have medical insurance and their own spending money.

The upcoming Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Summer Games Program will begin Monday, and run through Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon in the Rosemary Clarke Middle School cafeteria.

The Nye County Sheriff's Office will hire qualified teachers, staff and student employees throughout the summer who would like to participate in this "G.R.E.A.T." opportunity.

Hospice cell phone collection program

Nathan Adelson Hospice is still working with Collective Good collecting unused cell phones to raise funds and to save the environment. This ongoing project is being reignited for 2007 with the hopes of clearing everyone's closets and dresser drawers of old cell phones.

Drop off places for cell phones have been identified and collection boxes put in place for the convenience of everyone looking for a way of disposing unwanted, out-of-date cell phones. Community partners are Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce, CC's Beauty Zone, Charleston Peak RV Park at the Winery, Wells Fargo Bank, Martinizing Dry Cleaners, Nevada Federal Credit Union, Valley Electric, The Wine Cellar and Nathan Adelson Hospice.

AYSO 2007 registration will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 30.

Hand and foot canasta is played about once every three weeks at 10 a.m. at the Elks Club. Card players and newcomers are welcome to participate.

VA van

A van is available to veterans needing transportation to the Veterans Administration Clinic in Pahrump.

Manse Elementary registration

Youth basketball

The Nye County Sports Association (NCSA) will hold eight weeks of basketball for youth ages 7-18 through its first Youth Summer Basketball League at $20 per child ($25 per child if registered after Friday).

Skills assessments will be conducted June 21 and 22 at Pahrump Valley High School. Practices will begin June 25. Games are scheduled from June 28 through Aug. 18. Mt. Charleston registration

Mt. Charleston Elementary School's kindergarten and all fall registration will be ongoing through today, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The school office will open back up again for all registration starting Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Horse, burro adoption

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will hold a special adoption event June 22-24 at Horseman's Park, 5800 E. Flamingo, in Las Vegas. The entrance to the Park is adjacent to Jimmy Durante Drive. Follow the BLM signs to the adoption site.

There will be an excellent selection of about 30 Mustang yearlings, geldings and mares and 10 burros for qualified adopters through the Adopt-A-Horse or Burro Program. They are vaccinated, wormed, healthy and looking for a family.

Many of the Mustangs and burros were gathered from the Spring Mountains Complex near Las Vegas in January or from other public lands throughout Nevada.

The animals may be previewed on the BLM's Web page at www.blm.gov.nv.st.en prior to the adoption. The Mustangs and burros will be available for viewing from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 22 at Horseman's Park.

Prescription meds assistance

Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance.

Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies.

Caregiver training

Giant pumpkin contest

The deadline to enter the second annual Giant Pumpkin Contest, sponsored by the Pahrump Master Gardeners, is 5 p.m. Aug. 1.

The contest is open to all residents living in the Pahrump Valley School District. First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded in three categories; age 7 and under, 8-18 and age 19 and over. The heaviest pumpkin among all entrants will be awarded the grand prize ribbon.

"Weigh-in" will be held Oct. 3 at the Master Gardener booth between noon and 8 p.m. at Petrack Park, Highway 160 and Basin. Pumpkins will be on display during the Fall Festival.
