Happenings about town enjoy board support
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Several local events received support from the town at the Pahrump Town Board's regularly scheduled meeting last Tuesday, giving townsfolk plenty to look forward to in the coming months. Pahrump will be the first place in Nevada to display the fine arts photography exhibit "Cleared Hot!" by Nicholas A. Price, a one-man show celebrating the U.S. Air Force. The exhibit, part of the U.S. Air Force's 60th birthday celebration, will be on display at the Bob Ruud Community Center July 1 though July 7, coinciding with the town's Freedom Festival. Grace Price, president of Nicholas Price Enterprises, LLC, asked for the town's official support and recognition of the showing. The board unanimously agreed to write an official resolution of recognition which will be displayed with the exhibit when it is shown at the Air Force Museum for six months in October. Additionally, the town agreed to allow Pahrump to be included in any promotional materials associated with the display. The tourism advisory board has been asked to help fund the display with an additional $6,500 from the room tax fund, but that decision is still under consideration. The 31st Miss Pahrump Pageant, to be held on Aug. 4 at the Pahrump Nugget, received support from the town in the form of the board's approval of a $1,500 grant to be funded by the room tax fund. Pamela Larmouth, one of the pageant's organizers, explained to the board that although the scholarship program used to be held at the Saddle West Hotel and Casino free of charge, the new owners do not allow youth groups to use their convention hall for events. As such, the pageant was forced to find another venue, costing the program $900 dollars in rental fees, as well as $675 for insurance fees. The Tourists Information Kiosk, outside the community center, will get a facelift, now that the board approved $7,500 from the room tax fund for the second phase of the project. The money will pay for a sign above the kiosk on the street side above that will say Pahrump, with mountains in the background, and have two types of lighting. The town funding is a match to a $7,500 grant the board received from the Nevada Commission on Tourism. The total cost of the second phase of the project will cost a total of approximately $12,130. |
