Maloy second, third in Classic

Dominique Maloy of Pahrump Valley High School was third in the 400-meter dash and second in the long jump at the Great Southwest Track Classic, contested earlier this month at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Maloy, a 15-time Nevada state champion in a brilliant career at PVHS, ran the 400 in 0:54.87, in a race won in 0:53.74 by Erica Alexander of Friendswood, Texas. Natalie Stewart of Spanish Fork, Utah, was second in 0:53.71.

In the long jump, Maloy soared 18 feet, 10 inches, to finish behind A'Lexus Brannon of Texas, who cleared 19 feet, 2 inches.

Maloy ran the opening leg for Nevada's 4x100-meter relay team that finished seventh in 0:48.41. Maloy had a big lead, but the second runner came up lame and dropped the Silver State quartet out of contention.

The winning team, in 0:46.18, was Texas.

In the 4x400, Maloy helped lead Nevada to a third-place finish in 3:47.05. Kayla Sanchez of Carson, Gloria Turner of Las Vegas, and Katie Palmer of Boulder City were in that race for Nevada. Utah won in 3:41.2, with Colorado second in 3:46.48.

Other Nevada scorers included:

Mel Lawrence, Reno, 3200-meter run, first, 10:42.56; McKenzie Dean, Pahrump Valley, 11th, 11:55.41; Heather Hollinger, Las Vegas, 12th, 12:08.69.

Katie Palmer, Boulder City, 300 hurdles, third, 0:43.45. The winner in 0:40.83 was Jacquelyn Coward of Tennessee.

Shade Weygandt of Mansfield, Tenn., won the girls' pole vault at 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches, a height matched by Rachel Laurent of Houma, La., who was ranked second on misses.

Capri Knox of Las Vegas was second in the triple jump at 38-5; the winner at 39-4 was Gabby Gioia of Nashville. Brittany Norman of DeSoto, Mo., won the shot put at 44-9 1/2. Kylie Spurgeon, Owasso, Okla., won the discus at 157-4.

In the boys' triple jump, Pahrump Valley's Kyle Mills was sixth at 44-1 1/2. Omar Craddick of Killeen, Texas, won at 49-9.

Boys winners included Chaz Daniels, Ada, Okla., 100, 0:10.79; Mychal Dungey, Austin, Texas, 200, 0:20.87; Danzell Fortson, Keller, Texas, 400, 0:46.5, and Charles White, 800, 1:52.64.

Bobby Nicolla, Parker, Colo., won the 1500 in 4:02.0; Kevin Williams, Lakewood, Colo., was first in the 3200 in 9:10.97.

Oscar Spurlock, Dallas, won the 110-meter high hurdles in 0:14.09, while Robert Griffin III, Copperas Cove, Texas, won the 300 hurdles in 0:35.47.

Texas won the 4x100 in 0:40.03 and the 4x200 in 3:06.73, while Nevada was first in the 4x800 in 7:51.46.
