In the days leading up to the 2007 Pahrump Little League Junior Division Championship, the Padres worked mostly on batting and fielding, according to Manager Ed Martinez.

But on game day, it was a stellar pitching performance that sealed the deal for the team in its 10-0 win over the Cardinals.

Joey McCaw threw a no-hitter through the five-inning game, which ended early due to the 10-run mercy rule. McCaw threw nine strikeouts to not only beat the Cards, but also Tuesday night's extreme wind and dust conditions.

The pitcher also had a great day at the plate. He slugged an inside-the-park homer to lead off the Padres' first inning. In the second inning, McCaw hit an infield single, but advanced to second when the Cardinals' first baseman dropped the ball. He later came home when Eduardo Martinez grounded out at first.

But the fielding and batting practice surely helped the Padres to victory. Martinez got his second RBI in the third, when he drove in Sean Morrow on a line drive to right field. That was moments after Morrow recorded an RBI with a grounder to right field that scored Tyler Counts.

"We were working on a lot of batting and fielding and it paid off," Manager Martinez said.

Also in the third, Ty Thomas made it home on a wild pitch after singling to left-center, stealing second and advancing to third on an error.

Ryan Pike and Morrow also scored on wild pitches. Pike's score came in the second and Morrow's in the first, an inning that also saw Pike and Martinez -- from first and third, respectively -- come home on an error.

The game's final run came in the fourth. In the Padres' last at-bat, Thomas hit a high-liner to centerfield for a base hit. He then stole second and got to third on a wildpitch.

Dylan Dace walked, and moments later, tried to steal second. While the Cardinals pitcher was throwing back to second in an attempt to catch Dace, Thomas stole home.

Martinez said his team's outstanding 16-0 overall season record was due not only to skills, but to attitude.

"The kids played as a team. They stuck together, they battled and they had a lot of heart," he said following his team's championship win. "It was a fun year, an awesome year. I enjoyed it a lot."
