Mark Smith has taken a couple weeks off and will return June 18 with his i-pod batteries charged and his pencils full of lead. Good ol' days; where have they gone? I have the privilege of writing the Back Then column you have been seeing in the Friday edition of the Pahrump Valley Times for the last four weeks. Letters to the Editor Newt is right! Political observers couldn't help but note comments from former Speaker of the House and idea machine Newt Gingrich recently in The New Yorker magazine. The man who oversaw the biggest sea change in political history - the Republican takeover of Congress in 1994 - had some pretty harsh words for our president and his mastermind. What would summer be without the boogeyman? Echoes of that last school bell of the year are still ringing in the ears of children who are tired of books and desks and need to run free. Their minds also need to run free, which is probably why we've already had an encounter with none other than the infamous Boogeyman. We're sorry ... and that's not an apology Alabama formally apologized the other day for slavery. Let's hope all those Alabama slaves looked down from heaven to behold this legislative enactment. Perhaps they felt better, maybe even, in a way, freed. Order necessary for opportunity After the fire? Nothing. |
