Nye Wins Final Round in Tax Suit --Pahrump High School Now Likely. Nye County has finally won its tax suit claiming that the equipment used by private contractors at the Nevada Test Site should be subject to county property tax. About $5 million in back taxes which have been accruing since 1965 will go to Nye County. Roughly $3 million each will go to Clark and Lincoln Counties.

The Nye County school board will meet mid June in Tonopah to consider the effects of the County's NTS $5 million tax windfall. Up to $1.5 million of the money will go to the schools. Robert J. Walker, school board president, said the board is unanimous in its desire to bring a high school to Pahrump as approximately 100 students are now being bused to Death Valley High School in Shoshone.

30 years ago this week

A unanimous vote urging the continuance of the experimental field station in Pahrump Valley was made at the Monday meeting of the Nevada Agricultural Advisory Council in Pahrump. The station, operated by the University's Cooperative Extension Service has been at its present location on Wilson Road for the past 10 years. The lease is up in July and the owner of the land, Larry Bolling, has other plans for the property.

Planning Advisers needed for Pahrump Valley - Another step is being taken toward master planning of the Pahrump Valley. A Pahrump Valley Planning Advisory Committee is being formed. The new board will work with the Town Board, the county planner and commission.

Pahrump Valley High School Athletes honored. Individual photo plaques were given to each member of the varsity baseball team which finished second in the league behind state title winner Moapa Valley. Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball as well as the girls volleyball team received awards.

20 years ago this week

Chuck Gollnick is the new electrical engineer at Valley Electric Association. He will oversee the electrical power distribution system at VEA. Gollnick formerly worked for Westinghouse Electric in Los Angeles before moving to Pahrump.

Kolojay Settlement said based on financial expediency, not legal merit. Letters from an insurance company and the state attorney general released this week by the Nye County sheriff down play the $20,000 settlement made to Ken Kolojay over an arrest for alleged pandering.

Kolojay was charged with transporting a woman to the Shamrock brothel for purposes of prostitution; he later sued the county, supplying evidence proving he was not the person involved.

Kelly Green was selected queen and Kristen Gregory was named runner-up in the recent Pahrump Valley Rough Riders queen and princess pageant. Andrea Cline was selected princess and Missa Cratty was chosen runner-up princess. The Rough Riders next points show will be held Saturday at the Pahrump rodeo arena.

10 years ago this week

George McDermott of Brigantine, N.J., is Pahrump's new town manager. McDermott, who is currently the town manager of Brigantine, was the unanimous choice of town board members who voted to offer him the job at a salary of $50,000 per year.

Entries for the second annual Pahrump Valley Open Inferno golf tournament are now being accepted. The individual stroke play tournament will be held July 4 on the Calvada Executive Course. Chad Goins, who fired a 61 last Independence Day on the par-59 layout, is the defending champion.

Organizers of a petition drive to place the issue of abolishing Nye County's commission districts on the 1998 general election ballot are about halfway there, as they have collected more than 1,600 of the required 3,661 signatures.

The measure would do away with districts and elect commissioners at large, throughout the county. Pahrump Town Board member Gary Hollis started the campaign about three months ago.

A huge influx of students at Pahrump Valley High School and Mt. Charleston Elementary helped enrollment in the Nye County School District close out the 1996-97 school year above the 5000 mark, for the first time in its history. Pahrump gained 472 students during the past year.

All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare. Marine Corps League of Pahrump

Active, reserve, retired and former marines are eligible for membership in the Greater Marine Corps League of Pahrump, Detachment No. 1199. Also, FMF Navy Corpsmen are eligible to join as well. Meetings are held at 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month at the VFW Post on Homestead Road.
