AT HONEYSUCKLE River Dogs, Storm to collide in key game
By JOSH CHASE
The River Dogs made it to at least one more round of Pahrump Little League baseball Minor Division tournament play. An 11-8 victory over the Red Wings means they'll play the Storm at 6 p.m. today at Honeysuckle Park. The Dogs' Monday night win wasn't the result of big bats, or perfect pitches, although there were a few of each of those. Instead, the team won by watching their pitches, drawing walks and taking advantage of wild pitches. "Nobody expected us to make it this far," said manager Matt Milliron following his team's win. "Our kids played great. Our kids really pulled it together for a really good win. We get to move on and play again." The biggest inning of the game for the River Dogs was the third, in which the team scored five runs to rally from a 5-3 deficit. Branden Hastings kicked the inning off with a one-out triple to right field. Nolan Toomer then grounded a run-scoring double to right field. Toomer later advanced to third and then, with two outs, was sent home when Josh DeMille-Gray knocked a run-scoring double to third base. River Dog Isaiah Reyes also had a RBI in the third. He hit a double that sent Raymond Whitney home. Also scoring in the inning was Noah Milliron, who came in on a wild pitch. But the Dogs gave up their share of runs, too. The Red Wings scored twice in the first, three times in the second and twice in the third, all on wild pitches. The Wings' final score came in the final inning--the fifth, because of the game's 2 1/2-hour time limit -- as the result of another wild pitch. Christian Balding scored twice for the Red Wings. Austin Beckman, Parker Erickson, Nathaniel Henry, Michael Bray and Cooper Weyen also scored. Noah Milliron started the game on the mound for the River Dogs. Hastings later came in and Wilson closed. "We had to use pitchers we haven't used much in the rest of the season," said coach Milliron. Fortunately for the River Dogs' pitching staff, the team was able to provide enough support at bat. Reyes, who scored an RBI in the third, also scored one in the second when he drove in Whitney. In the fourth, Hastings hit an inside-the-park home run to right field. Moments later, Toomer made it to third on wild pitches and was sent home by Derek Vanlandigham. The winner of tonight's game will face the Defenders Friday at Honeysuckle Park at 6 p.m. in the championship round. The Defenders are undefeated in the double-elimination playoffs, which means if they lose Friday, another game will be played Saturday. If they win Friday, however, they'll become the 2007 Division 4 champion. |
