Seven teachers were recognized Saturday at the eighth annual Stand for Children Day, held at Rosemary Clarke Middle School.

Every year, St. Martin's Episcopal Church Reverend Julie Platson organizes this event to recognize teachers who have shown great dedication and classroom mentoring during the school year.

The teachers were Susan Warner of Pahrump Valley High School; Tonia Petrie of Rosemary Clarke; Laura Weir of J.G. Johnson Elementary; Debra Banks of Manse Elementary; Cherie Burgess of Mt. Charleston Elementary; Georgia Salway of Hafen Elementary, and Vicky Harrison of the Community Christian Academy.

Dennis Keating, from the Nye County School District, was the master of ceremonies. The Nye Communities Coalition helped in funding the event.

This annual event not only gives the schools a chance to nominate their own teacher of the year, but also gives the community a chance to say "thank you" to all teachers.

The event also gives the community the opportunity to recognize the many talented youths who have a lot to offer our community.

Burgess said, "I'm honored to receive the award. There is no better honor than loving, helping and teaching children."

Salway said, "It's an honor to receive the Teacher of the Year award. You have to be surrounded by great teachers (to be a great teacher)."

Said Warner, "Teaching is a team effort."

Children of the schools provided entertainment.

The PVHS Choir sang the Star Spangled Banner and "Love You;" Caleb Alexander performed "The Kraken," Amanda Martin sang "My Heart Will Go On" and "Don't Forget to Remember Me," Haley Duncan performed "Royal Cat Blues," the Artistic Centre performed "Hair" and "Seasons of Love," Hannah Lane performed the 'Hungarian Rhapsodie No. 2," Sierra Fitzgibbons performed a ballet she choreographed, Hannah and Bobby Lane performed "Seasons of Love," and Joshua Willing performed "Hall of the Mountain."

Initiation of this event was the result of the Family Resource Centers in Nevada being charged with planning an event on or around June 1, to bring to the forefront the needs of the children and youth in the community. The idea was presented to not only celebrate the youth, but honor those who work most closely with them - the teachers.

If interested in nominating next year's award winners, contact Rev. Julie Platson at 537-1115 or the NCC at 727-9970.
