Nick Owens was the big winner Tuesday night, when the Pahrump Valley Youth Golf Founders Club held its annual spring awards program in the high school gym.

A senior on the Trojans' boys' golf team, Owens was named recipient of the Founders Club's $5,000 scholarship, presented annually to a boy or girl whose excellence in athletics, particularly golf, and academics are the prime criteria for selection.

Owens said he will attend -- and play golf at -- Southern Utah University in Cedar City.

Desiree Fortin, a four-year starter for the Pahrump Valley girls' golf team that won back-to-back Nevada Class 3-A state championships in 2005 and 2006, received a $1,000 scholarship from the club. Fortin was a two-time Southern League player of the year.

Ashley Keller, who has played for both state title teams, was named winner of the Floyd Eagle Award, presented by Robert Worden.

The Eagle award is named in honor of Ray and Charlotte Floyd, who have given their money and time to help promote Pahrump youth for more than 40 years. The award includes a $250 scholarship.

Also recognized were various other programs, including the Farmers Cup Adult-Junior Series and the Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association, as well as the Rosemary Clarke Middle School team.

At the Lady Trojans' fast-pitch softball team awards program, also held Tuesday, the major award winners were Ashleah Barney (pitcher of the year), Emily Poertner (defensive player of the year), Becca Gamble (offensive player of the year), and Taylor Raymer (most valuable player). The Heart of a Champion award went to Abi Gill. Raymer and Gamble are freshmen, while Barney and Poertner are juniors. Gill is a senior outfielder.

Rich Lauver, the Lady Trojans' coach, announced his resignation as coach. His teams won three state 3-A titles and advanced to a fourth tournament, as the PV girls finished 129-70 in five seasons, including an 87-30 run in the title campaigns.
