Everyday heroes somehow persevere
The fact is, today's economy leaves much to be desired, let alone understood. It's not as good as it was five or 10 years ago. The cost of living is higher, everyone has had to adjust, realign and rethink his priorities. The dollar just doesn't go as far as it did before.

Is Nellis really out to get us?
Several months ago I received some telephone calls from folks with a real problem. It seems those unthinking jerks at state DOT had installed slick concrete at some road crossings. You'd have thought a major crisis was strangling the rights of our driving public.


Leading ideology with competency
One time, years ago, the veteran Baltimore newspaperman, H.L. Mencken, was checking copy coming in from the night editor and sighing at the rising number of errors he was noticing, errors of fact but also of syntax, and even some idioms that didn't sound quite right. He shook his head and said, as much to himself as to the editor at his side: "The older I get the more I admire and crave competence, just simple competence, in any field from adultery to zoology."

Our hellish moral war with ourselves
Ever since terrorists used our own planes to bomb us and kill thousands of purely innocent people, America's most daunting challenge has been to remain better than those who did that to us.

Home theaters make it easier to steer clear of TV
Television viewership has been down lately, which is bad news for producers and sponsors of television programming. Reports of declining interest in watching television are intriguing, given the American love affair with ever-higher tech ways of tuning in -- cable, satellite, surround sound, flat screens, HDTV and so on.
