Foster, adoption support group

The first meeting of the Pahrump Foster To Adopt Support Group will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Family To Family office, 160 S. Emery.

Home school bowling

The Pahrump Home School Bowling League is now taking sign ups for the summer bowling season, which will begin June 8 and end Aug. 17 and meet at 9 a.m. at the Pahrump Nugget bowling center.

The Home School Bowling League accepts home-schooled children from 3 and a half to 17 at any bowling skill level with parental consent. There are no tryouts; it is a friendly league and all who participate will receive a trophy at the end of the season. The summer season will cost $65 per bowler for the entire season.

Ms. Senior Golden Years pageant

The Ms. Senior Golden Years U.S.A. pageant will be held at 7 p.m. June 9 in the Saddle West Casino showroom.

Support our senior ladies and celebrate five successful years of pageantry that assists the needy and other seniors in the community.

Summer dance sessions

The Artistic Centre is offering summer dance sessions, including hip hop, ballet, tap, jazz and combo. Gymnastics, voice and acting classes are also offered. Students must be ages 3-18.

PAC one woman show

The Pahrump Arts Council gallery committee invites the community to a reception to honor artist Judy Fitzgerald, from 1-3 p.m. today at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St.

The works of "Judy Fitzgerald, A One Woman Show," will be featured in the library through July 13. Her art is spirit-filled and rendered in brilliant color.

Ninth grade summer school

Pahrump Valley High School is providing summer credit computer-based recovery classes at no cost to ninth graders who need to retake one or more required semesters in English, math or science, starting June 11 and ending June 29.

Morning classes will be from 8 a.m. to noon and afternoon classes from 1-5 p.m. Students can sign up for this program in the main office or the A building on a first come-first serve basis or the parent or guardian can call and reserve a spot for the student by calling 727-7737.

Prescription meds assistance

Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance.

Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies.

Pick up cards at pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, located at 250 N. Highway 160, Ste. 4, or call 751-7095.

Hosts sought for exchange students

NW Services, a non-profit and CSIET-approved program, is looking for caring families in the area to host high school students from Mongolia, Japan, Belgium, France and other countries.

The students are 15 to 18 years of age and will begin arriving in August, staying five to 10 months, attending local high schools. They speak English, have medical insurance and their own spending money.

Single parents, retirees and those who have small children, teens or no children are eligible to be host families.

Wall of Heroes

Those who would like a military photo of a loved one to hang in S.S.I.'s new military museum and gallery at Chief Tecopa Cemetery may submit photos to Awards Plus at 1231 E. Basin. Photos will be duplicated and also placed on the wall at Wal-Mart.

Panic disorder group

Panic Relief Inc., a non-profit organization based in New Jersey, is forming a group in Pahrump to help people who suffer from panic attacks, anxiety and agoraphobia.

At least four people are needed to start this free support group, which will have a positive focus.

Pet adoptions

Nye County Animal Services holds pet adoptions every second Saturday of the month, (weather permitting), at Groomingdales on 1651 Charleston Park in Pahrump (off Highway 372).

Cats and kittens are $36 each and dogs and puppies are $64 each. Adoption fees include spay or neuter, rabies vaccination and a one-year license for dogs and puppies.

The Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management anticipates conducting a public mailing in October and wishes to update its mailing lists. Tutors needed for Pathways

The Pathways program needs tutors in mathematics. In addition, tutors are needed for language arts in the areas of grammar and vocabulary.

A willingness to work with middle- to high school-aged students is a must.

Exchange students host homes needed

DM Discoveries, a government-monitored exchange student program, is seeking host families in Nye County and the surrounding areas for foreign exchange students due to arrive in August for the 2007-08 school year.

Each student has full medical coverage, pocket money and has expressed a true desire to become a participating member of an American family - pitching in on everything from household chores to family discussions.

Power Wheelchairs

Wishes on Wheels makes available electric power wheelchairs to non-ambulatory senior citizens 65 and older and the permanently disabled of any age, if they qualify.

Electric wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and also cannot operate a manual wheelchair sufficiently or safely enough to care for themselves in their residence.

Marine Corps League of Pahrump

Active, reserve, retired and former marines are eligible for membership in the Greater Marine Corps League of Pahrump, Detachment No. 1199. Also, FMF Navy Corpsmen are eligible to join as well. Meetings are held at 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month at the VFW Post on Homestead Road.

Youth employment, training services

GNJ Family Life Center is offering employment and training-related services to youth ages 14 through 21. These services include tutorials, job placement assistance, GED preparation, high school proficiency tutorials and more.

To determine eligibility, individuals should bring their Social Security card and a copy of their birth certificate.

The Nye County School District volunteer coordinator's office is looking for an assistant; duties include meeting people and helping to place volunteers where they are needed.

The Nye County Animal Shelter offers a low-cost spay and neuter clinic, which is not based on income and is open to everyone.

The only criteria which must be met is dogs must be current on vaccines and owners must provide proof of shots at the time of the appointment.

The Daughters of Mary will hold a fish dinner from 4-7 p.m. today in the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church hall at 781 E. Gamebird Road.

School program

The eighth annual Stand for Children Day/Teacher of the Year Program will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Rosemary Clarke Middle School.

The program will include breakfast, Teacher of the Year awards from each Pahrump school and all-youth entertainment.

AYSO registration

AYSO 2007 registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; 6-8 p.m. June 13; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 30.

Players born between Aug. 1, 1988, and July 31, 2003, are eligible to sign up. A copy of the child's birth certificate must be brought to registration. You can also pre-register your child at www.eayso.org.

The County Veterans Service Office will be closed Monday through June 8. The office employees will be attending training.

Manse Elementary registration

Manse Elementary School will continue pre-registration for kindergarten students through Thursday. Kindergarten registration will then resume June 15 and continue until June 25. Fall registration for kindergarten through the fifth grade will begin Aug. 6.

Movers and Shakers meeting

The regular meeting of the Pahrump Valley Movers and Shakers, a support group for people with Parkinson's disease, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Desert Greens Clubhouse, 350 W. Wilson Ave. (next to the hospital).

Jodi Servin, M.S.W., L.S.W. from the National Parkinson Foundation, is the facilitator and consultant for the group.

Anyone with Parkinson's disease, as well as their caregivers and/or family members are welcome to attend this group. It is open also to anyone with a movement disorder. Light refreshments will be served.

VA van

A van is available to veterans needing transportation to the Veterans Administration Clinic in Pahrump.

Early Childhood screening

The Nye County School District has a responsibility to locate, assess and identify children ages 3-5 who are not enrolled in any school program and who may have some kind of developmental delays.

If your child is currently being served through Nevada Early Intervention, contact the district about 90 days prior to your child turning 3 years of age.

If you live in Pahrump, to make an appointment for an evaluation for your child during the week of June 11-15, please call the ECSD office at 751-2638. The office is located at 2200 S. Mt. Charleston Drive W.

Youth basketball

The Nye County Sports Association (NCSA) will hold eight weeks of basketball for youth ages 7-18 through its first Youth Summer Basketball League at $20 per child. Traci Ann cancer fund

Long-time Pahrump residents Jim and Jo Thorne's daughter Traci Ann has been battling cancer for some time. Due to the overwhelming medical expenses they have endured, an account has been set up at Bank of America to help them. Any donations will be very welcome.

The account is under the name of "Traci Ann Pokelsek-Baarsma Medical Fund."

Kiwanis yard sale

The Kiwanis Club of Pahrump Valley will hold a yard sale, starting at 7:30 a.m. June 9 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Donations may be dropped off at Kaye's Allstate in the Albertson's shopping center or call Marianne at 209-3752.

Proceeds will go into the club's 501(c)3 foundation for various community projects.

Salvation Army Bible School

The Salvation Army's Vacation Bible School, for all children ages 5 through 14, will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. June 13-15 at the Salvation Army Church grounds (The Manor), 721 S. Buol Road.

The Amargosa Valley Artist Guild will hold its fifth annual Art & Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16 at the Amargosa Valley Community Center, 812 E. Amargosa Farm Road.

Food will be available as artists and artisans from Amargosa Valley, Pahrump, Las Vegas and elsewhere show their creations.

Summer games

The upcoming Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Summer Games Program will begin June 18 (the week after school ends June 11), Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon in the Rosemary Clarke Middle School cafeteria.

The Nye County Sheriff's Office will hire qualified teachers, staff and student employees throughout the summer who would like participate in this "G.R.E.A.T." opportunity.

The Pahrump Valley Rough Riders' Gymkhana event will be held at 6 p.m. June 16 at McCullough arena.

Radio raffle

Southern Nye County Amateur Radio Emergency Service Inc., is hosting a raffle to raise funds for the group.

Prizes include: One $100 gift certificate at Smith's Grocery, one $50 gift certificate at Smith's Grocery, one $50 gift certificate at Wal-Mart, a free car wash at Carbucks and assorted hand-made gifts donated by club members.

Winners will be notified by phone and do not need to be present in order to win. The drawing will be June 24 at 11 a.m. during the ARRL "field day," which is scheduled the weekend of June 23 and 24 in the parking lot of the Pahrump Nugget Hotel & Casino.

The Oasis Writers' Guild of Pahrump is holding a writing contest for the public (non-members of the guild); the winner will receive $25.

Write 500 words or less about your favorite war the U.S. fought in and rewrite the outcome of the battle, meeting, treaty or event. For example: "What if Paul Revere didn't make it in time to warn everyone?"

Nathan Adelson Hospice will hold the third annual Blue Butterfly Coffee House, an event celebrating the '60s, June 30 in the event center at the Pahrump Nugget.
