Freshman leads the way for LeadAmerica
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Megan Johnson is proving that you're never too young to start working toward your dreams. The 14-year-old freshman at Pahrump Valley High School is doing everything she can to help raise funds for a leadership conference, LeadAmerica, that she was selected to attend based on her academic record and extracurricular activities. "They found me," Johnson said, explaining how she got the letter informing her she had been selected for the conference. The conference allows top students from around the world to study abroad for a period of two weeks while learning leadership and team-work skills. They do this by meeting with an impressive array of global leaders; last year's group got the chance to meet and greet with President George W. Bush, Senator Hillary Clinton, and former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, to name just a few. For Johnson, it's an important step in achieving her life goals of either studying political science or neuron-psychology. But the one she is certain of is that whatever discipline she decides to study, she wants to study it at Oxford, a campus she's excited about having the opportunity to tour if she attends the conference. In addition, Johnson could spend two days with a host family in Austria, where someone her own age will show her around the country. The tuition, combined with spending money and some funds for the four or five business attire outfits she'll need, comes to a total of $6,020. So far, with some help from her father's union and some generous local sponsors, Johnson has managed to raise $4,300. But that's after the $2,000 that was donated to her that she decided to give back to Local 135, to start a scholarship in her mother's name. If you would like to help sponsor Johnson for this life-changing experience, call her at (702) 335-2638 or at (775) 751-5133.
