PVJGA EVENT AT THE EXECUTIVE COURSE Owens, Moore win Goins golf titles
By DON McDERMOTT
Elliott Owens and Derek Moore made it look easy in winning age-group titles in the annual Gene Goins Memorial Junior Golf tournament at the Executive course. The tournament was played Monday and Tuesday, with 39 players ages 7 to 17 entered in the Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association event that concluded the spring-summer season. Owens, playing in the boys' 12-14 division, shot 69-70--139 on the par 59, 3,600-yard course that was raked by high winds Tuesday, after relative calm on Monday. Daniel Shimakawa was second with 70-78--148, and third at 75-77--152 was Ryan Hammar. Josh Spradlin had 79-75--154. In Flight B, Zack Harris was the lone competitor and had 100-95--195. Derek Moore, an 8-year-old playing in the boys' 9-11 division, prevailed with 42-40--82, beating Kyle Steib's 43-44--87 in Flight A. In Flight B, Joshua Willing had 49-53--102, while Nolan Toomer had 58-52--110. Jasper Biggs, a member of the 2006 Pahrump Valley girls' golf team that won a second straight Nevada Class 3-A title, won the girls' 15-18 championship with 78-80--158. In the boys' 15-18 tournament, Will Peers shot a 63 on Tuesday to run away with the title. His 77-63--140 overpowered the 80-90--170 of Isaac Shook. Tori Peers won the girls 9-11 championship with 45-40--85. Krista Toomer won the girls' 7-8 title with 50-56--106, and Carli Thornberg, the granddaughter of tournament co-directors Larry and Elaine Goins, won the family division with 52-58--110. Amber Thornburg had 60-50--110 in 9-11 girls, and Nicholas Thornburg had 56-55--111 in 7-8 boys. In the girls' 12-14 competition, Shyanne Dixon won Flight A with 100-85--185, with Taylor Ball at 95-103--198. In Flight B, Emilynne Biggs had 106 on the second day to earn the first-place trophy. In 7-8 boys, Lucas Tietjen won with 40-43--83, two strokes ahead of Chance Walker (43-42--85). In 7-8 boys B Flight, Sean Miskiewicz was first with 55-48--103. Chrisian Quitevis had 57-53--110. Larry Goins was not concerned with the number of competitors; only 39 of 99 eligible players chose to play. "As long as those 39 boys and girls are out here having fun, that's all that matters," said Goins. "We had the tournament a week earlier than we normally do and there are a lot of families on vacation this week. And we had it earlier because we're going on vacation next week." The Goins Memorial is the final major junior golf event of 2007, following the Pahrump Junior Golf Founders Club's Quarter-Auction, Inferno Open tournament, and the presentation of scholarships to Pahrump Valley High School golfers. This year, Nick Owens and Ashley Keller benefitted from PJGVA awards. The Pahrump Valley High School girls' golf team begins workouts Aug. 13, as it prepares to go after a three-peat in 3-A state competition. The Trojans, coached by Julie Floyd, previously won Nevada championships in 1997 and 2002. |
