Women's rodeo in Pahrump Aug. 3-4

A women's rodeo, presented by Rocking M Rodeo, will be contested Aug. 3-4 in McCullough Arena. The Women's Professional Rodeo Association will sanction the event. Next Thursday, there will be a pre-rodeo party in the arena at 8 p.m., with live music. On Aug. 4, it will be 'Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night.' Rocking M will donate $1 for each person who wears pink to The Southern Nevada Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Action begins at 8 each night. Advance tickets are available at Shadow Mountain Feed, Windrock Ranch Country Store, Pahrump Western Wear, and Arnie's Cocktail Lounge. The gates open at 7 p.m. each day of the rodeo. According to the latest association standings, the leader in barrel racing is Kay Blandford of Sutherland Springs, Texas, with $14,185.35. Second is Jymmy Kay Davis, Gonzalez, Texas, with $11,264.90, and third is Teresa Kerr Brown, Huntersville, N.C., with $8,688.28. In all women's barrel racing, Dollie Lauteret is first with $1,269.05. In all women's breakaway roping, Debbie Robbins is first with $1,351.68, with Leigh Ann Billingsley second with $955.45. DeDee Crawford is first in bull riding with $565.64; Mandy Shipskey is second at $382.72. Kim Williamson leads the tie-down roping world standings with $786.60; Debbie Robbins is second at $560.50. In team roping-header world standings, Teri James is first with $1,319.03, barely ahead of the $1,257.73 posted by Jolee Lauteret. In the roping-heeler standings, Tammy Lewis is first with $2,304.58. Dolli Lauteret is second with $2,128.66. According to the WPRA schedule, the women's Wilderness circuit moves on to Tonopah for a rodeo Aug. 10-11, during a sequence of programs at Panguitch, Utah, Aug. 3-5; Coalville, Utah, Aug. 10-11, and Monticello, Utah, Aug. 10-11. The WPRA started in 1948, with a group of Texas ranch women organizing it. The association now has more than 2,000 members. In 1995, the WPRA approved barrel races in 800 rodeos sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association with total prize money hitting $3 million. |
