Board approves grants
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
A number of grants have been approved for various town events. The Pahrump Town Board approved up to $72,000 for matching funds for various grants the Tourism Advisory Board was awarded to help fund future events, including the Pahrump Pow Wow event, advertising for the Wild West Extravaganza, and advertising for the Fall Festival. The town was presented with an original photograph from the "Cleared Hot!" Nicholas Price photography exhibit, which honored the U.S. Air Force's Anniversary. The exhibit was on display at the Bob Ruud Community Center earlier this month and supported by the town in the form of a formal resolution and $7,500. The gift was a formal thank you for the town's support. In light of the recent success and popularity of the Friday night, outdoor movies being shown at Petrack Park, the board also approved a seven-week agreement with Milestone Entertainment to ensure the show goes on. Although the original plan was to fund the movies through community sponsorship, lack of response led the company to ask the town for $14,000 to fund the movies. The money will come from the Parks Room Tax Fund. Chairman Laurayne Murray, although in support of the movies as a fun activity for residents, expressed disappointment in the lack of local support for the event. In anticipation of the proposed fairgrounds, and the two proposed theme parks that may be built on them, the board approved purchasing a lot of water rights. The board approved purchasing a total of 43 and a half acres of water rights for $574, 555. Approximately $750 of the money is available from the county as part of money specifically set aside to fund water rights for the fairgrounds. Nathan Adelson volunteer training Nathan Adelson Hospice has scheduled a volunteer training class. For those who feel that giving back to the community is important to being a part of the commmunity, this is just the thing. Volunteer training classes are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 20-21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nathan Adelson Hospice office at 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900. As the only non-profit hospice program in Southern Nevada volunteers are an integral part of the success of the operation. For more information call Tonya Brum at 751-5601. |
