Spaghetti served western style
By MARY BALDASANO
Ever seen any of the old western movies of the 1960s? Those with a "young" Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and others, that were not filmed in the American Southwest but rather in the Italian-style southwest. These "spaghetti" westerns" were directed by Italians and the musical scores were written by Italians. The history of these movies was the inspiration of Oscar and Patricia de Massi when opening their new restaurant, the Spaghetti Western Company. Located inside the Who's Dunes Bar and Grill at the corner of Linda Street and Highway 372, the restaurant is ready and waiting to serve Pahrump an original Italian menu. Although the house specializes in Italian food, it also serves hamburgers and suchlike. The two moved to Pahrump eight years ago to offer their children a better, safer environment, one they could enjoy. Oscar has been a chef for 25 years and apprenticed under some of the best Italian chefs. He emigrated from Naples, Italy, and opened restaurants in Florida and Las Vegas. Visitors to those places included Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Marlon Brando, and many more. The de Massis hope to make the Spaghetti Western Company the best gourmet food in town, but without the high prices. "Most anyone can afford to enjoy our restaurant. We invite everyone to come give us a try. We hope to please all of you," Oscar said. Patricia is a very gracious hostess. She supervises the waitresses and helps out if needed with the seating and serving. She also makes sure the "red" room, located in the back of the restaurant, is preserved for those who do not wish distractions during their meal, or for groups gathering to share a meal. Oscar had watched all the old westerns as his uncle wrote the music and a family friend was the director. He came to love the American West and Patricia shares his enthusiasm. He said, "While the presentation of any meal is a vital part of the patron's satisfaction, the authenticity of it is where the attention should be given. Also, the food should be made fresh, when it's ordered. If at all possible, requests should be met, but not at the expense of the food itself. After all, if you change the food, it's no longer what you ordered." The de Massis emphasize that they give their patrons proper respect in an appropriate atmosphere and with superb food. Their food is simply delicious and gives you the feel of an old western town's café or a sidewalk café in the heart of Italy. The music of choice is, of course, country and western, but with an occasional instrumental to keep the atmosphere restful. It's a very special place operated by very special people. Give it a try. The restaurant is open Tuesday-Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Closed on Monday. Right now reservations are not required and the whole family is invited. If you have questions, you can call 775-727-4300. |
