Daughters of Mary fish dinner The Daughters of Mary will hold a fish dinner from 4-7 p.m. the first Friday of the month in the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church hall at 781 E. Gamebird Road. Fried or baked fish, as well as homemade desserts will be available. The dinner is dine in or take out. Bible school registration The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church is now accepting registration for Vacation Bible school, which will be held July 23-27 for children ages 3 through the sixth grade. Call the church from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at 727-6767 to register or drop by the church during these hours. Free vision screenings During the month of August, Dr. George D. Leaks is offering free vision screenings for children ages five through 18. These screenings will not result in a spectacle prescription. However, they will determine if a comprehensive eye exam should be scheduled. Appointments are available and will be seen first, but walk-ins will be accepted. Calvada Blvd. Family to Family July calendar The July class schedule for Family to Family Connection, located at 160 S. Emery, is as follows: Monday -- Foster parent support group, 6 p.m. July 23 -- Closed for parenting class in Amargosa. July 27 -- Nevada early intervention services family day at Petrack Park, 11 a.m. Nutrition class is at 11 a.m. every Tuesday. Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Playgroup is at 1 p.m. every Thursday. For carseat safety checks or assistance with Nevada Check-up applications, please call for an appointment. Call 751-5898 (se habla español) for more information. PVCAT is back The Pahrump Valley Community Action Team is back. Past board of directors recently reunited and working together reinstituted the organization. A meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at Great Basin Community College, Room 107, to seek input and support to develop PVCAT's future agenda. It is the community's input and support that will determine the future of PVCAT's direction. A social will begin at 5:30 p.m., with sandwiches and refreshments. Teen needs help Katlyn, Nye County Cinderella Teen, needs your help. She will be attending the Nevada State Cinderella Scholarship program from July 29 to Aug. 3 in Las Vegas. A fundraiser in Las Vegas did not yield enough funds for her to go. She is still short approximately $700. Funds aare needed by July 20, but the final deadline is July 25. Receipts will be provided. Any amount will help. To find out where to send money, call Kathy Butkovich at 727-7040. Quilts 4 Cancer Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501C3 charity, needs financial sponsors. Funding is needed to continue giving cancer comfort quilts to those in the area (not Las Vegas). In Nye and Esmeralda counties, many residents are being treated for cancer. Some of the current wish list includes material for tops, rotary blades, backing, etc. Donations may be sent to: Quilts 4 Cancer, P.O. Box 4702, Pahrump, NV 89041. Hunter safety course The Nevada Department of Wildlife and The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation are sponsoring a hunter safety course in Pahrump. It is mandatory for first time hunters. Hunting season is just around the corner. The in-depth hunter course will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., July 30-31, Aug. 1-4. You must attend all listed classes. Open mic poetry Open mic poetry will be at Lois Layne's on July 21, from 10: a.m. until noon, corner of Dahlia and Basin. The host will be John Salacan. Domestic violence seminar series Domestic violence is a national epidemic. The social workers of Nathan Adelson Hospice along with Lisa Lynn Chapman, executive director of No To Abuse, will discuss this subject and related subjects from noon to 1 p.m. July 31 on Channel 30. Giant pumpkin contest The deadline to enter the second annual Giant Pumpkin Contest, sponsored by the Pahrump Master Gardeners, is 5 p.m. Aug. 1. The contest is open to all residents living in the Pahrump Valley School District. First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded in three categories; age 7 and under, 8-18 and age 19 and over. The heaviest pumpkin among all entrants will be awarded the grand prize ribbon. Weigh-in will be held Oct. 3 at the Master Gardener booth between noon and 8 p.m. at Petrack Park, Highway 160 and Basin. Pumpkins will be on display during the Fall Festival. Donna's Studio of Dance Donna's Studio of Dance is now holding registration for classes to be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 at the studio, 401 S. Frontage Road, Suite No. 3. Have some fun Pahrump's senior karaoke idol will be held at Who's Dunes, Hwy 372 and Linda St. If you're at least 50 years old and an amateur, here's your chance to win some cash. Entry fee is $10 for each contestant. 1st place winner wins $150; 2nd place wins $100; 3rd place wins $75. Contestants shall be judged on voice, stage presence and song presentation. Songs limited to 4.5 minutes, Contestants must act in a professional manner. Seating is limited to 45 people. Auditions are from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Contestants need to sign up before July 29 for Aug. 5 audition; Aug. 5 for Aug. 12 audition; Aug. 12 for Aug. 19 audition. Finals will be held Aug. 26. Call Chairman Dan Bighaus, 702-202-5327. School dress code The following dress code has been instituted for Pahrump Vally High School. Student attire should be modest in nature. Clothing that bears slogans which are sexually suggestive, promote or suggest the use of drugs, contain vulgar language or ethnic/racial slurs or any other word or image deemed inappropriate by the administration will not be permitted. Unacceptable clothing: flip flops (this includes "athletic slides" manufactured by companies such as Reebok, Nike, etc.); tank tops (shirts must have sleeves) torn clothing (example: cutoff shirts, shorts, jeans with holes) and so on; bandanas, do-rags, hats; sunglasses (inside building); visible undergarments; any clothing endorsing gang activities; shorts, skirts must reach mid-thigh or extend beyond fingertips whichever is longer; pants must be worn at or upbove the hips, no sagging. Shirts must cover torso entirely, no "belly shirts." If midriff shows when arms are raised, it is inappropriate. Students found in violation of dress code may be asked to turn shirts inside out, call home for acceptable clothing, or be sent to in-house for the day. The adminstration will have the discretion to determine the appropriateness of school attire. Aglow meeting Aglow International of Pahrump will hold its next meeting from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Water From the Rock Christian Fellowship, 1370 E. Artistic Centre performance The Artistic Centre actors will present the comical fairy tale mystery "Holka Polka" at the Pahrump Valley High School Saturday. It's a one day only performance that will include a matinee at 1 p.m. and an evening show at 7 p.m. Tickets are $4 at the door. PVHS Registration Registration for enrollment for Pahrump Valley High School students will begin Aug. 1. The counseling office will be open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. For those in need of a later registration time, the office will also be open until 8 p.m. on Aug. 2, and Aug. 9. For questions regarding registration, please call the counseling office at 727-2280. Red Cross training American Red Cross volunteers respond to a disaster almost every day. The Red Cross is offering a course to provide volunteers with the skills and tools needed to respond to single family emergencies and to represent the Red Cross at the scene of a disaster. On Aug. 1 a volunteer training course will be held from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in Pahrump. The training location will be provided when registration is received. To enroll to be a Red Cross volunteer, register for the class at www.redcrosslasvegas.org. and click on disaster training. The enrollment form is at the bottom of the page. This class is free. Dandelion, Sat., starting at 7 a.m. Everything must go, including two refrigerators and a stove. Make offer. All proceeds will benefit Water From The Rock Christian Fellowship mission trips. Fill the bucket truck event Valley Electric Association (VEA) invites the community to join in the drive to collect school supplies to be distributed by the Nye County School District. The "Fill the Bucket Truck" event is on Aug. 11. A VEA bucket truck will be parked in the Wal-Mart parking lot to accept donations of school supplies from 7 a.m. through 1 p.m. Karen Jackson from K-NYE Radio will broadcast the event live and each person who makes a donation will be given a drawing ticket for a chance to win power bill credits and other fabulous prizes. In addition, school supplies can be dropped off at either the main lobby of Valley Electric Association, 800 E. Highway 372 or at Kaye's Allstate Insurance, 150 S. Highway 160 (next to Albertson's) for all of August. Any donations at either of these locations will also be eligible for a drawing ticket for power bill credits and other prizes. Miss Pahrump Pageant The Miss Pahrump Pageant will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Pahrump Nugget. Tickets are on sale now. VIP seating is $15 and general seating is $10. Tickets may be purchased from any Miss Pahrump contestant, at Decadence Day Spa in the Pahrump Station Shopping Center on Postal Road between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or call Pamela, 751-2717, leave message. Centre dance The Artistic Centre will present its ninth annual dance and voice recital at the Pahrump Valley High School auditorium on July 27 at 7 p.m. and on July 28 at 1:30 and 7 p.m. This year's theme is Broadway, which includes vocal numbers and dance routines in combo, pointe, jazz, tap, and hip hop. Tickets are $6 each. Call Mary Albin 751-0880. Charity golf tournament The Rural Health Care Foundation is having its sixth annual charity golf tournament. It is sponsored on behalf of rural health care. These include Central Valley Medical Center, Allen Memoriial Hospital, and Desert View Regional Medical Center. The event will again be an 18-hole four person scramble to be held at Gladstan Golf Course, located in Payson, Utah. This fun event will be held on Sept. 13 with a Shotgun start at 8 a.m. We look forward to your participation as a sponsor. Sponsor fees have been set to encourage greater participation. All proceeds will be used to support all health care services and activities in rural communities. Format: four player scramble Prizes awarded for first, second, and third player. Enrollment will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 31 for the sixth grade; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 1 for the seventh grade; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2 for the eighth grade. Open enrollment for all grades will be Aug. 6-10 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday. The Nye County School District office is open all summer and may be able answer questions; 727-7743. Well owners meeting The Nye County Well Owners Association monthly meeting place has been changed from the VFW to the Pahrump Library meeting room. The time is changed from 11:30 to 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month. These are permanent changes. Members get a free annual water testing, inspection and a well check for depth. The Angels in the Outfield team will also be selling luminary bags for $10 to be placed in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of those who have lost the battle against cancer at the Aug. 18 Relay candle-lighting ceremony. Babies in need Stitches From the Heart needs volunteers to knit, crochet or quilt blankets, little sweaters and hats for babies in need. These items are donated to hospitals all over the country. Motivational speaker Keith Froehling will be at the Pahrump Senior Center at 11 a.m. Thursday to share his life's experiences with the seniors.
