ROUT AND RIOT Mom busted for inciting youth brawl20 JUVENILES AND ADULTS ARE ARRESTED AFTER DEPUTIES ARRIVE AT THE FIGHT SCENE
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
As the Nye County Sheriff's Office put it, "Bad parenting leads to 10 local adults and 10 local juveniles being arrested." The incident began Wednesday, when a 13-year-old boy was allegedly jumped and beaten by a group of teenagers. When the youth's mother, Michelle Shelton, 40, of Pahrump, found out about the incident, she called up several of her son's friends and told them what happened. Shelton then organized a retaliation attack on the boys who had beaten her son. The victim's friends contacted the alleged perpetrators and spread the word that there was going to be a fight at 3rd and East streets. At that point, the sheriff's department was called and Dep.'s Boruchowitz and Schiller were dispatched to the area. When the officers arrived, they reported, they found 17 people gathered in the street and weapons ranging from shovels to hammers to baseball bats spread among those at hand. A fight was already in progress. The deputies separated the individuals and detained them while waiting for backup. At that point, they noticed that Shelton was in her car watching what the sheriff's office referred to as "the mayhem that she had some part of organizing." Further investigation at the scene led deputies to believe that Shelton had some role in organizing the uproar. Everyone involved stated loyalty to one side or the other and admitted they had previous information as to when and where the fight would take place. In addition, everyone involved said they didn't do anything to stop or discourage the fight, but all came to watch. Shelton came back to the scene at that point and told Boruchowitz that she knew what was going on, at which point the deputy questioned her as to the preliminary planning of the fight. Shelton was then arrested for rout and riot, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and endangering the welfare of a child. Her bail was set at $4,764. Nine other teenage adults and 10 other teenage juveniles were arrested for rout and riot. The teenage adults' bail was set at $632. The juveniles were released into the custody of Juvenile Parole and Probation. |
