BLUE BUTTERFLY Coffeehouse discovers where the flowers went
By MARY BALDASANO
The third annual Blue Butterfly Coffeehouse was held June 30 and hosted by the Pahrump Nugget. Recalling the 1950s and '60s on the wings of butterflies, the attendance was absolutely astounding. What a difference a year makes. Master of ceremonies Dan Rodriguez quickly got activities under way by amusing the audience with his slight of hand expertise as well as a few sly jokes. He introduced Susan Zink, singer, who led the audience in a renewal of the Kingston Trio hit "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" Also bringing the 50s and 60s back on the wings of a butterfly was Peggy Thompson and the John Denver hit "Take Me Home, Country Road." Other performers included Michael Roybal and Jeff Wilson, Muriel Areno, Jimmy Spina, Brian Nelson, Lorraine Baskeyfield. Corporate sponsors of the evening included Focus Group and Nevada Federal Credit Union, at $1,000 each. Others included CC's Be-auty Zone at $500 and St. Martin's Episcopal Church at $250. The Pahrump Nugget donated the banquet room as well as the food for the evening. Other sponsors graciously gave considerable donations in support of this year's event. The beneficiary of the $7,400 in contributions was Nathan Adelson Hospice, an organization that helps patients who are in the final stages of terminal diseases. The skit for this year was "Cinderella" with a twist. Soroptomist International of Pahrump Valley presented this funny and unbelievable version of the popular story. Willi Baer, running around with a toilet plunger and yelling, "I'm the fairy Godmother," could only leave Cinderella wondering how this fairy godmother was going to help her. Ugly sisters Helene Campton and Dorothy Ryans made you want to run -- fast. Cinderella, played by Veronica Summers, was totally abused to the point of, well, it's a good thing murder is illegal. The Handsome Prince, played by Scotty Winegar, had some trouble getting the combat boot (glass slipper) onto his princess. This version of Cinderella would give children nightmares. The whole story kept you laughing so hard, you'd be visiting Desert View for stitches. Talk about auctions, live and silent, as well as raffles and one door prize, there was a lot on which to bid. Some of the items at the live auction included: two custom embroidered jackets, Mary Palmer, M & R Embroidery, autographed canvas guitar and shirt, Keith Coates and canvas guitar, a 10-week-old male Yorkie puppy (sold for $450). Silent auction sample: tickets for four to a Chippendales show, Pleasure Points of Nevada framed poster (ladies of the evening, sold for over $300), $100 gift certificate from Jewelry of Romance. Raffle items included a Pampered Pet basket, Anne Geddes book, gift certificate 1 Hour Martinizing, gift certificate to the Cupcakery.
