Daughters of Mary fish dinner The Daughters of Mary will hold a fish dinner from 4-7 p.m. the first Friday of the month in the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church hall at 781 E. Gamebird Road. Fried or baked fish, as well as homemade desserts will be available. The dinner is dine in or take out. Night Run Harley Hog's and Hot Rod's ride again today. The ride has stops at Mountain Springs, Last Chance Saloon in Pahrump and ends at the Short Branch Saloon in Crystal, Nevada. A $25 donation includes a pig roast and breakfast. Giant pumpkin contest The deadline to enter the second annual Giant Pumpkin Contest, sponsored by the Pahrump Master Gardeners, is 5 p.m. Aug. 1. The contest is open to all residents living in the Pahrump Valley School District. First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded in three categories; age 7 and under, 8-18 and age 19 and over. The heaviest pumpkin among all entrants will be awarded the grand prize ribbon. Weigh-in will be held Oct. 3 at the Master Gardener booth between noon and 8 p.m. at Petrack Park, Highway 160 and Basin. Pumpkins will be on display during the Fall Festival. Artistic Centre performance The Artistic Centre actors will present the comical fairy tale mystery "Holka Polka" at the Pahrump Valley High School July 21. It's a one day only performance that will include a matinee at 1 p.m. and an evening show at 7 p.m. Tickets are $4 at the door. Bead & Fiber Artists Society The High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists Society for Adults meets every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Seemores Ice Cream Parlor on Highway 160. High school registration Registration for enrollment for Pahrump Valley High School students will begin Aug. 1. The counseling office will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. For those in need of a later registration time, the office will also be open until 8 p.m. Aug. 2 and Aug. 9. Call the counseling office at 727-2280 for more information. Quilts 4 Cancer Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501C3 charity, needs financial sponsors. Funding is needed to continue giving cancer comfort quilts to those in the area (not Las Vegas). In Nye and Esmeralda County, so many residents are being treated for cancer. Free vision screenings During the month of August, Dr. George D. Leaks is offering free vision screenings for children ages five through 18. These screenings will not result in a spectacle prescription. However, they will determine if a comprehensive eye exam should be scheduled. Appointments are available and will be seen first, but walk-ins will be accepted. Call 727-8300 to schedule an appointment for your child. The clinic is located at 2120 E. Calvada Blvd. Animal rescue yard sale The West Star Ranch old dog and animal rescue garage and yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Saturday at 3091 S. Unicorn Ave. (between Dandelion and Gamebird). There will be a lot of brand new clothing for all ages and sizes, toys, gift items, Las Vegas souvenirs, books on tape, collectibles and more. All proceeds will go to the care, feeding, spaying and neutering of rescued old dogs, cats of all ages, and other assorted animals in need. Pet food, cash donations and volunteers to work at the ranch are needed. Please stop by to sign up, donate or just shop. Summer reading program A summer reading program, with volunteer tutors available to help students going into kindergarten through middle school, will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. July 31, Aug. 2, Aug. 7 and Aug. 9 at the Salvation Army, 721 S. Relay for Life fundraiser The Pahrump Relay for Life team, "Breakfast at Tiffany's," will hold an omelet in a bag breakfast, along with juice, coffee and toast, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 15 at the Bob Ruud Community Center. The cost is $3 for one or two for $5. A yard sale will also be going on at the same time. This is to help raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, which will be held Aug. 18 and 19 at Petrack Park. Car wash fundraiser A fundraiser will be held for the Relay for Life July 28 and 29 at both locations of Super Wash, on Calvada and Pahrump Valley Boulevards or on Dahlia behind Albertson's. One dollar from each automatic wash will be donated to the Relay for Life team. Hospice fundraiser Nathan Adelson Hospice (NAH) will host its 13th annual Serenades of Life, a physician's benefit concert, at 7 p.m. July 28 at the Flamingo Library Theatre, 1401 E. Flamingo Road in Las Vegas. Many local doctors, members of the medical community and friends will lend their musical talents to help raise funds for the hospice. Caregiver training Nathan Adelson Hospice will provide a two-day workshop teaching individuals to be caregivers in a home/hospice or health care/nursing home environment, starting at 8:30 a.m. July 16 and 17 in the conference room at the hospice, 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900. Space is limited for this no-cost 16 hour training. Reservations must be made no later than July 12. Registration for the 2007-08 school year for kindergarten and all new students will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning Aug. 6. CCNGS monthly meeting The monthly meeting of the Clark County Nevada Genealogical Society will be held July 21 at the Paseo Verde library located at 280 So. Green Valley Pkwy. in Henderson. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and ends at noon. Meetings are open to the public interested in doing Family History Research. She recently attended Nevada State Cinderella Scholarship program on July 29 to Aug. 3 in Las Vegas. Our big fundraiser in Las Vegas did not yield enough funds for her to go. She is still short approximately $700.00. We need to have the funds by July 20, but the final deadline is July 25 of this year. Receipts will be provided. Any amount will help. Hunter safety course The Nevada Department of wildlife and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation are sponsoring a hunter safety course, Pahrump. It is mandatory for first time hunters. Hunting season is just around the corner. This is a good time to join us for some fun, during our in-depth hunter course, the first week of August. on the following nights for 2 hours and concluding on Saturday for 4 hours. Babies in need Stitches From the Heart needs volunteers to knit, crochet or quilt blankets, little sweaters and hats for babies in need. These items are donated to hospitals all over the country. Bible school registration The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church is now accepting registration for vacation Bible school, which will be held July 23-27 for children age 3 through the sixth grade. Veterans Memorial Anyone interested in acquiring a plaque for the Veterans Memorial at Chief Tecopa Cemetery can do so Monday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Bob Ruud Community Center. The Veterans Administration requires a copy of the DD214 or related service information to process the request. This meeting is to file the initial paperwork to request a plaque.
