'INSPIRED TO WRITE' Beatty High grad interns at Nevada Magazine
By RICHARD STEPHENS
The Nevada Magazine staff gained a Nye County infusion recently as Beatty High School graduate Audrey Greene has been working as an intern with Events Editor Ann Henderson. Greene transferred from the University of Colorado and is now a senior in the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She is aiming for a career in broadcast journalism but is also enjoying her work at the magazine. When the magazine staff found out Greene was from Beatty, they put her to work writing a story about Rita's Cafe at the Stagecoach. She is also working on stories about several other eateries for a feature planned for the September-October issue on rural Nevada restaurants. Greene says she was surprised at first at how much Henderson involved herself in her work. "Beatty's loss is certainly my gain," Henderson said. "I couldn't be happier having her serve her communications internship with Nevada Magazine. Audrey has the talent and basic instincts of a much more seasoned writer, plus a great work ethic. "We work in a deadline-driven and sometimes hectic environment, but she quickly picks up what needs to be done. The folks in Beatty, Death Valley, and Pahrump will be glad to know that she has contributed story ideas and suggestions that can only help promote the area." "My time at BHS was definitely invaluable to what I am doing now," says Greene. "Beatty must have had something to do with me wanting to be a journalist, because I've known since high school that that is what I wanted to do." "Although I never worked on the high school newspaper, I was still inspired to write and was much more interested in the creative writing assignments teachers would give us. In retrospect, I think such assignments contribute to the success of the stories I am now writing for Nevada Magazine. "Because the school was so small, teachers knew students on a different level than in larger high schools and actually wanted to see us do well. This forced me to have a disciplined work ethic, which was definitely necessary for college." "Overall, Beatty was just a fun high school to belong to, and like other high schools around Nevada, it had its quirks. But I realize now even more that by taking advantage of everything BHS had to offer, I really got an all-embracing high school experience that has, without a doubt, helped me make it to my senior year in college." |
