Prescription meds assistance

Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance.

Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies.

Pick up cards at pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, located at 250 N. Highway 160, Ste. 4, or call 751-7095.

Red Hatters meeting

The Pahrump Valley Red Hatters will meet from 10-11:45 a.m. July 17 at Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church, Highway 372 and Pahrump Valley Boulevard.

New members are being accepted. Call Gloria (513-8640) or Carmen (727-1304).

High school registration

Registration for enrollment for Pahrump Valley High School students will begin Aug. 1.

The counseling office will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. For those in need of a later registration time, the office will also be open until 8 p.m. Aug. 2 and Aug. 9. Call the counseling office at 727-2280 for more information.

Quilts 4 Cancer

Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501C3 charity, needs financial sponsors. Funding is needed to continue giving cancer comfort quilts to those in the area (not Las Vegas).

In Nye and Esmeralda County, so many residents are being treated for cancer. Some of the current wish list includes material for tops, rotary blades, backing, etc.

Animal rescue yard sale

The West Star Ranch old dog and animal rescue garage and yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Saturday at 3091 S. Unicorn Ave. (between Dandelion and Gamebird).

There will be a lot of brand new clothing for all ages and sizes, toys, gift items, Las Vegas souvenirs, books on tape, collectibles and more.

All proceeds will go to the care, feeding, spaying and neutering of rescued old dogs, cats of all ages, and other assorted animals in need.

Pet food, cash donations and volunteers to work at the ranch are needed. Please stop by to sign up, donate or just shop.

Book signing

The Pahrump Community Library will hold a book signing at 10 a.m. Saturday at 701 East St.

Author Howard West will present his book, "Quicksilver Key," which examines the ancient past with new insights discovered by the author.

Free vision screenings

During the month of August, Dr. George D. Leaks is offering free vision screenings for children ages five through 18.

These screenings will not result in a spectacle prescription. However, they will determine if a comprehensive eye exam should be scheduled.

Appointments are available and will be seen first, but walk-ins will be accepted.

Call 727-8300 to schedule an appointment for your child. The clinic is located at 2120 E. Calvada Blvd.

Bible school registration

The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church is now accepting registration for vacation Bible school, which will be held July 23-27 for children age 3 through the sixth grade.

Call the church from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at 727-6767 to register or drop by the church during these hours.

Summer dance

Donna's Studio of Dance is offering salsa, swing, ballroom, hip hop, ballet and kung fu classes. Call 727-9480 or 727-4211 to register.

Democratic Club meeting

The Democratic Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

School volunteer office hours

The Nye County School District Volunteer Coordinator's office will only be open from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays during school break. Call the office at 727-7743, ext. 258 or 259 for more information.

Relay for Life

Applications for walkers and donations for the relay team will be taken after Masses Saturday and Sunday at Our Lady of the Valley Church on Gamebird.

Chances will be available for five handmade afghans (at $1). The Angels in the Outfield team will also be selling luminary bags for $10 to be placed in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of those who have lost the battle against cancer at the Aug. 18 Relay candle lighting ceremony.

Babies in need

Stitches From the Heart needs volunteers to knit, crochet or quilt blankets, little sweaters and hats for babies in need.

These items are donated to hospitals all over the country. Donated yarn is desperately needed for seniors and children's knitting programs.

CCNGS monthly meeting

The monthly meeting of the Clark County Nevada Genealogical Society will be held on July 21 at the Paseo Verde library located at 280 So. Green Valley Pkwy. in Henderson. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and ends at noon.

Meetings are open to the public interested in doing Family History Research.

Special Olympics bowling will start at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Pahrump Nugget.

Night Run

Harley Hog's and Hot Rod's ride again July 13.

The ride has stops at Mountain Springs, Last Chance Saloon in Pahrump and ends at the Short Branch Saloon in Crystal, Nevada.

A $25 donation includes a pig roast and breakfast. Proceeds go the Boys' and Girls' Club of Pahrump.

Daughters of Mary fish dinner

The Daughters of Mary will hold a fish dinner from 4-7 p.m. every Friday of the month until Lent in the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church hall at 781 E. Gamebird Road.

Fried or baked fish, as well as homemade desserts will be available. The dinner is dine in or take out.

Foster parent support group

Family to Family will hold a foster parent support group at 6 p.m. Monday at 160 Emery St. Call 751-5898 for more information.
