Fishing Report

LAKE MEAD

Anglers using cut bait in the Las Vegas Bay arm have been doing well for small stripers, but shore anglers have been finding very little action. Game wardens said there has been very little activity from either boaters or shore anglers.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife will resume its trout stocking activities on Lake Mead today. Fish will be released at Hemenway, Pumphouse Cove and North Saddle Cove.

The agency suspended its trout stocking program in the Southern Region following the discovery of quagga mussels in Lake Mead earlier this month.

This step was taken as part of the agency's efforts to stem the spread of these invasive mussels to other waters.

Once NDOW has an approved method for moving trout raised in the Lake Mead Hatchery, Supervising Biologist Jon Sjoberg hopes the agency can resume its stocking activities in additional waters.

LAKE MOHAVE

Windy conditions and cold temperatures have combined to keep anglers off the water at Cottonwood Cove.

Todd Tyler, who works at the marina, said "January tends to be slow on a normal year. Anglers are going to have to work for their fish. They are out there, but it won't be easy," he added.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA

The reservoirs are iced over, but conditions remain unsafe for anglers. There is some open water.

You may see a few die-hard fishermen venturing onto the ice, but the ice is not safe. A fall through the ice can have deadly consequences.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR

Cold, slow and cold. That is how Park Supervisor Pete Gill described fishing at Eagle Valley.

Nighttime temperatures dropping below zero have had anglers looking for warmer accommodations, but those willing to bundle up have found fishing to be good through the ice.

For those who are leery of getting on the ice, you can fish from the dock. PowerBait or worms are still the baits of choice.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR

Bundle up, drop some PowerBait through the ice and get ready for a fish fry. Cold temperatures have limited activity, but trout can still be pulled through the ice.

Use PowerBait for and worms for trout and small jigs for crappie.

URBAN PONDS

Trout have not been stocked into the urban ponds since the discovery of quagga mussels in Lake Mead. That doesn't mean you can't catch fish, but you may have to work for them.

Look for areas of cover where the fish can hide from predators or places where the water is agitated. Try PowerBait, Power Eggs and small spinners.

Put a small ball of bread or a mealworm on a number-16 hook and you may trick a bluegill or two into biting.
