SPECIAL TO THE PVT

Reno McQueen, the dominant large-school football program in Northern Nevada over the past two decades, will play a non-league game against a powerful California opponent for the first time since 1999.

The Lancers, who went 6-4 with an underclassman - dominated team this past season, will open their 2007 season with a road game against Serra of San Mateo, Calif., Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. As part of a home-and-home agreement between the two schools, McQueen will host Serra in its 2008 season opener.

Serra, located about 20 miles south of San Francisco, belongs to the West Catholic Athletic League, which dominates the Central Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation in most sports.

The school is best known athletically for being the alma mater of baseball star Barry Bonds, who graduated in 1982 and played football and basketball as well as baseball in high school.

Three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots also played there, as did football Hall of Famer Lynn Swann and former NFL quarterbacks Jesse and Jim Freitas.
