Wall of Heroes

For those of you that have shopped at Wal-Mart and entered the store by the north entrance, it is hard to miss the numerous amounts of photos that hang on the wall.

These are all pictures of people who are either retired veterans, soldiers on active duty, non-active or now deceased. Many of them were killed in action, protecting our country. Those pictures were presented to Wal-Mart by the relatives of these soldiers. This wall was dedicated to all of our soldiers. When the family members presented these pictures to Wal-Mart, they were told that these pictures would remain on that dedicated wall for all of us to see as we walked into the store. We are all grateful to the store manager for allowing us to honor our soldiers.

It has come to my attention that newly-elected Nye County Commissioner peter Liakopoulos has requested that he wanted to remove the pictures and display them at the Chief Tecopa Cemetery. Not as many people would have the opportunity to view them. Mr. Liakopoulos does not own these pictures; they now belong to Wal-Mart and the relatives of the soldiers. He has no right to remove these pictures.

Denise Choyce and her husband have donated their own personal money to the wall. Jim Jones, Denise's father, donated the money for the brass nameplates. Denise has spent numerous hours working on this project and I commend her for all of her dedication to the Wall of Heroes.

If you also feel that this is an inappropriate action that Mr. Liakopoulos is attempting, please stop by Wal-Mart's north entrance to sign a petition to stop this move.

PAULA AMSLER

Thank you, Pahrump

I would like to thank all the wonderful people who signed the support sheets at Wal-Mart this past week.

All of you have shown your support for the wall and support for our present and past military members and their families.

Once again, thank you.

Advice to

'unhappy mama'

My advice to "unhappy mama" (PVT, Jan. 19) would be to purchase a battery-operated radio (and some batteries) and tune into KNYE 95.1 on the dial (local station).

During Tuesday's blackout, Karen, the manager, was in touch with Valley Electric and told us what was happening, how long it might last, where comfort shelters were located, and helpful hints like making coffee on the "Barbie."

Thank you Karen for being there.

One-stop home

My family and I would like to give a big round of applause to Freedom Homes.

In December 2005, we moved from Las Vegas to Amargosa Valley. We spent months looking at various models of manufactured homes.

Friends of ours had gone through other companies and had received poor customer service. The day we walked into Freedom Homes, we found a model that was perfect for our needs in a home.

We were elated when our home arrived in less than three weeks. We would like to personally thank Lance, Matt, Mary and Jody. The customer service we received was above and beyond the call of duty.

Jody, who is charge of customer relations at Freedom Homes, has great tips and is very prompt in resolving any issues that may arise.

The Fleetwood manufacturers in Idaho really put out the effort to ensure customer satisfaction.

Everyone who has seen our home is in awe of the layout.

I would encourage anyone in the market for a manufactured home to make Freedom Homes your first stop. Based on the quality and excellent customer service, it will more than likely be your only stop.

Thanks again Freedom Homes.

Scout's blood drive a success

Thank you for helping me with my Eagle project. The blood drive went very well. I needed 50 pints of blood for my project to be successful and I received 53 pints. I couldn't have accomplished it without your help.

More respect and thanks

This is in response to the letter written by Marci Wisniewski in the Jan. 19 edition.

Amen to your well-written letter. There should be more positive letters like yours instead of negative ones.

I think it's just human nature that makes people respond negatively to bad happenings.

This tends them to find blame wherever they can, so their first reaction is negative - they find somebody to blame.

Whether it be the sheriff's department, fire department or our most recent one, Valley Electric, etc.

These people do all they can for us and more under certain circumstances.

For one, more people, valley too spread out, more area to cover.

Under these circumstances and more, I think they are doing a remarkable job.

Respect and thanks are what they deserve.

Living in the Pahrump Valley for over 24 years, I have survived, and believe me, you will too.

MARY H. SACKETT

No thanks,

Peter

To the people of Pahrump: It's about time to get control of these two-bit, wannabe politicians and put them in their place.

I'm talking about Peter whats-his-name and his trying to get the wall down at Wal-Mart.

Number one, it's none of his business what Wal-Mart puts on their wall as they own it. Too bad he's got nothing better to do than irritate the people of Pahrump.

As someone from his own state said, "He was an a____ there and he's still one." If he's not too lazy and wants another wall of pictures somewhere else, then do one himself (or have his wife do it).

I don't want my tax dollars spent on these kinds of things and don't think others do either. If he wants to confront me face to face, contact me and we will make plans.

If he's got the guts.

And by the way, bring your discharge papers from the service.

EDDIE SHARRON

Belated thanks

A very belated thank you to the citizens of Pahrump for your very generous response to the appeal put forth by KNYE 95.1 FM to fill all food banks in town.

KNYE 95.1 FM also had an appeal for local businesses to "Adopt A Family," and I wish to thank Ditto Productions, Republic Mortgage, Mr. and Mrs. James Wulfenstein, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shepard, Two Guys Handyman Services LLC, High Impact Sign and Design LLC, Pahrump Radio Inc., Saddle West Hotel and Casino, Pahrump Valley Auto Plaza, Price Is Right Mini and RV Storage, Silver State Imaging, Sun Valley Homes of Pahrump, Get It Cheaper, Starboard Homes Inc., and anyone else I may have not been advised of.

A very special thank you to Karen Jackson and Patricia Whittier for all the time and effort you put into making this program the success it was.

There were many families in Pahrump that enjoyed a happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas as a result of your generosity.

Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church

Thank you, Denise

Peter, you did wrong. You have a building not yet finished, with "sage brush" in a cemetery. A cemetery is a place of respect for those who have passed on. A cemetery is not a place for living, fighting veterans and other living veterans.

You kept many families up for many sleepless nights, as well as caused a lot of personal upset to the veterans' families. You alone caused a great deal of upset and stress for families of our fighting veterans, stress they did not need.

The wall was in part due to you, it was not yours to own. Nor was it yours to take down and place in boxes until the building can be finished. We need some repairs to the Veterans Cemetery, yet not the living wall. Not without asking family members first about their loved ones.

Thanks, Denise Choyce, for standing up for every one of the families. Need help on funding, give me a call, Denise - I'll do what I can, and so will many others.

BARBARA JOHNSTON

El Pollo Loco

Following up on a letter to the editor that appeared Wednesday, Jan. 19, indicating that an El Pollo Loco restaurant has been approved for construction in Pahrump, I'd like to provide some clarification. While we have looked at sites in the area, there are no immediate plans to construct an El Pollo Loco restaurant in Pahrump.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to respond to the author's designation of El Pollo Loco as a "Spanish eatery." El Pollo Loco is certainly proud of its Mexican roots and we do offer a delicious assortment of fresh Mexican entrees. Our menu, however, is far more diverse and includes a wide variety of menu items that appeal to a broad audience, including fresh, made-to-order salads topped with our signature flame-grilled chicken, side accompaniments to our chicken meals that include fresh steamed vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy, creamy macaroni & cheese, and much more.

As El Pollo Loco expands across the nation, our fresh, healthful menu offerings have received a warm welcome in many different regions of the country, including Chicago, Denver and Connecticut. Every neighborhood should have a wide assortment of restaurants for consumers to choose from and we believe that El Pollo Loco is a wonderful complement to any community. As a healthful alternative to traditional fast food, El Pollo Loco is a unique and special restaurant concept that combines the value and convenience of fast food with the high quality and freshness of more upscale fast-casual chains.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond. We look forward to continuing to offer fresh, delicious food to consumers across the nation.

Thanks Dan

Hello Dan, just read your article on the first hunt (PVT, Jan. 19).

"Pigeons are a great choice for a first, or family, hunt if you know a nearby rancher or farmer having problems with them. Remember though, 'If you shoot 'em, you eat 'em.' There are some great recipes for grain-fed pigeons. Then it's time for the real thing."

I wanted to thank you for the comment "If you shoot 'em, you eat 'em."

It's a very important message to get across to new young hunters. No live animal or bird should be used for target practice. Pigeons are usually thought of as pretty low on the game list but they are wonderful birds and they are excellent eating. I see way to many people killing pigeons and wasting their lives just for a bit of fun.

Your words are very appreciated and show some deep respect for living things.

So, I just wanted to drop a note of thanks for putting that in your story. Cheers.
