Kiwanis Club offering scholarships

The Kiwanis Club of Pahrump Valley will give scholarships to high school seniors for continuing education.

The scholarship will be awarded to qualifying students based on academics, participation and volunteer service.

Arterial, bone

density screening

Life Line screenings to check for the possibility of cardiac problems, osteoporosis and stroke will be held, beginning at 9 a.m. Feb. 28 at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St.

Screenings involve the use of ultrasound technology and scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries, which can lead to a stroke; aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta, and hardening of the arteries in their legs, a strong predictor of heart disease. Additionally, a bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk will be offered for men and women.

The non-invasive, painless tests take about 10 minutes each and are offered for $45 each or $129 for all four screenings. Patients are sent their results from Life Line and are referred to their physicians.

Teen Care sale

Teen Care will hold a movie, book and CD sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 24 in front of Wal-Mart.

Hundreds of used VHS, DVD's, books and music CDs will be for sale. All proceeds will help send youth in the program to an "Acquire the Fire Teen Conference" in California.

Art & Sol craft fair

The Art & Sol fine art and craft fair, sponsored by the Pahrump Arts Council, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 28 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The 13th annual event will be held indoors with limited space on a first come, first served basis. One does not have to be a PAC member to participate. The entry deadline for all fine art and fine crafts is March 1.

Republican central committee meeting

The Nye County Republican Central Committee will hold its first regular meeting of 2007 at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Beatty Senior Center.

Evergreen at Pahrump is currently taking applications for the upcoming C.N.A. class to be held Feb. 5.

Movers and Shakers meeting

The regular meeting of the Pahrump Valley Movers and Shakers, a support group for people with Parkinson's disease, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Desert Greens Clubhouse, 350 W. Wilson Ave. (next to the hospital).

Jodi Servin, M.S.W., L.S.W. from the National Parkinson Foundation, is the facilitator and consultant for the group.

Anyone with Parkinson's disease, as well as their caregivers and/or family members are welcome to attend this group. It is open also to anyone with a movement disorder. Light refreshments will be served.

Genealogical society meeting Thursday

The Pahrump Nevada Genealogical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pahrump Museum on Basin Avenue.

The program will be presented by John Weisser, director of the museum and author of "Montgomery, Nevada, 1891-1904." He will give an update on recent happenings at the museum.

Daughters of Mary fish dinner

The Daughters of Mary will hold a fish dinner from 4-7 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church hall at 781 E. Gamebird Road.

Fried or baked fish, as well as homemade desserts will be available. The dinner is dine in or take out.

Breast cancer screening

Mammovan will be in Pahrump to offer mammograms Feb. 20, 21 and 22 at the Bob Ruud Community Center (150 N. Highway 160 and Basin).

VFW February calendar

The February calendar of events for the VFW Post 10054 on Homestead Road is as follows: domestic beer $1.25, bottle beer $1.50, draft $1.25 every Thursday; breakfast served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Sunday, $4 donation; and full menu lunches served by Dennis from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Dinners:

Feb. 2 -- Cheese chicken, by the American Legion.

Feb. 9 -- Meatloaf and mashed potatoes, by the Ladies Auxiliary.

Parenting class

Parents Who Care is a parenting class that will be offered to parents and their children (ages 11 to 18) at 160 Emery St., Suite B.

The Parents Who Care classes are scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m., Feb. 9; 8 to 11 p.m., Feb. 10; 6 to 9 p.m., Feb. 16; and 8 to 11 p.m., Feb. 17.

To complete the course, a total of 12 hours must be attended; Chris Brockman will be the facilitator.

Senior Golden Years fashion show

The Ms. Senior Golden Years USA board of directors invites the lovely ladies of Pahrump to its fifth annual luncheon, fashion show and silent auction at noon Feb. 24 at the Saddle West Hotel & Casino.

There will be great food, great fashions and great buys at the silent auctions. Learn about this year's pageant for senior women, which is scheduled for June 9 at the Saddle West.

Volunteers for film wanted

Volunteers are being sought to take part in different aspects of a western-themed film being made in Pahrump.

Assist the sheriff's department

The Nye County Sheriff's Auxiliary (Sheriff's Auxiliary Unit) is currently taking applications for membership to assist the Nye County Sheriff's Department.

The SAU works with many other agencies besides law enforcement. Those who are 21 and over, retired or working, male or female, can donate a minimum of 15 hours per month and meet certain requirements may be eligible. Volunteers will do community service in uniform and will be able to set their own hours.

M.S. golf tournament

The third annual Classic Multiple Sclerosis Golf Tournament, to fund research and promote awareness of M.S., will be held March 31 at Lakeview Executive Golf Course, 1471 Mt. Charleston Drive.

The tournament will be a four person Better Ball Scramble and played in two flights of 72 golfers; one at 8:30 a.m. and one at noon. The tournament entry fee is $40 per player, which includes golf, lunch and prizes.

Entertainment will be provided throughout the afternoon. Raffle winners will be drawn, starting at 3:30 p.m., with tourney winners announced immediately after the raffle drawings.

Rummage sale

The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a "large winter/spring rummage sale," featuring a lot of good used items and clothing, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 2 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 3 at 1300 East Highway 372.

Baked goods and lunch will also be available.

Chinese auction

Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will hold a Chinese auction Sunday in the church hall, 781 E. Gamebird Road.

The items can be previewed from 2 to 4 p.m.; the drawing will be at 4 p.m. Admission of $2 includes cake and coffee. Tickets are 10 for $1 and raffle tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5.

All proceeds will go to the Mortgage Debt Reduction Fund. Call 727-4044 for more information.

Parrot Society

The Parrot Society is an organization in the planning stages and is seeking those who can be involved in the startup of this very important project. The organization will hold monthly meetings, swap meets, parrot outings, merchandise exchange, bulk purchasing of food and supplies as well as other things that will benefit parrots.

It's important to have an open forum to aid others who have trouble with their birds or who just need help with problems they may be having. It is also imperative to be able to save those who are being abused or mistreated and to find a good and loving home for them, as they deserve nothing less.

4-H Fair

A 4-H Fair will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Amargosa Community Center at the park, 871 E. Amargosa Farm Road.

Commodities pickup

Nevada Outreach Training Org/No To Abuse will hold a second USDA commodities pickup from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday; 2 to 5 p.m., Tuesday; and 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday.

Commodities can be picked up at No To Abuse, 621 Blagg Road.

Adopt an animal

Progressive Choices of Pahrump (a 501C3 non-profit organization) is holding a stuffed animal adoption.

All animals 12 to 16 inches are up for adoption for a minimum $10 donation. The proceeds will help keep people with disabilities employed in Pahrump.

All star basketball camps

Registration is now open for the Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp and the Bryan Adrian Summer Basketball Camp, both to be held at locations across the county.

The Ten Star camp is by invitation only. Boys and girls ages 10 to 19 are eligible to apply. College basketball scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American Team.

Spay, neuter clinic

The Nye County Animal Shelter offers a low-cost spay and neuter clinic, which is not based on income and is open to everyone.

The only criteria which must be met is dogs must be current on vaccines and owners must provide proof of shots at the time of the appointment.

Hospice Seminar

Options Series

Nathan Adelson Hospice's January forum will focus on cigarettes and smoking during the hospice's monthly Seminar Options Series on Channel 30 from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Channel 30/62 Studio, located at 250 Nopah Vista.

Dr. Michael Reiner, co-medical director for Nathan Adelson Hospice in Pahrump; and Sherry Yarbrough and Cathy Benton, both nurses at the hospice, will make up the panel (two ex-smokers and one smoker).

Those in the studio and at home will have an opportunity to question the panel. The number to call the day of the seminar is 751-3624.

Fiber arts show

The annual Fiber Arts show, presented by the Pahrump Arts Council Feb. 16, 17 and 18, will feature a "Kitchen Quilt Challenge," to create an original quilted kitchen pot holder.

Participants may submit their work in one of three categories: most unsuitable for the purpose, most beautiful or most practical. The Quilted Dragon is offering a $50 prize to the winner in each category.

For a $2 entry and judging fee per pot holder, participants will receive the rules and a pot holder ring that must be attached to the entry. The pot holder must be no larger than 9 inches square.

Pahrump Valley Cruisers

Meetings for the Valley Cruisers of Pahrump, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting non-profit organizations in the community, are held the second Monday of each month at the Last Chance Saloon and Steak House.

The meeting area is reserved at 5:30 p.m. for dinner, with the meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. Everyone interested is welcome.

Free drug tests

Teen Care provides free drug tests for the children of concerned parents and guardians.

The test detects marijuana, cocaine, meth, opiates, amphetamines and more. All services are free and confidential. Teen Care provides Christian help for teens involved with drugs or alcohol.

Volunteer for SCORE

All active or retired business people are encouraged to share their knowledge and experience by being a volunteer SCORE counselor.

Sponsored by the Small Business Administration, SCORE provides free consultations to all who want to start a business. SCORE will provide training for volunteers.

Youth softball signups

The signup dates for Pahrump Youth Softball are Jan. 29; from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 31; and from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 27 and Feb. 3.

All players get a free uniform and trophy. The season runs from March to June. Beginners and advanced players are welcome. Parents are needed to volunteer.
