Pahrump Airport grant wins OK

Another quarter in the piggybank.

The town board Tuesday evening approved a Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) grant for $15,789 that will help fund the Pahrump Valley Airport.

The grant is provided by the Nevada Aviation Trust Fund program for rural airports.

The money is a state match that will be added to a $375,000 federal grant the town received in 2003 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Investment Program.

The airport will be located about two and a half miles south of the end of Gamebird Street near the California state line.

Since the airport project initially began in 1983, it has been a long road of bureaucracy and government, but slowly and surely the airport is moving along.

"We're progressing, slowly," Charlie Gronda, the airport planning director said. "I can't predict a date when we'll be done because the timing is controlled by grants, the federal government and the (Bureau of Land Management)."

Gronda said that although public perception is that the airport is his project, in fact the town board has consistently approved every facet since the inception of the idea.

He said the airport will be a "great help for the community. It'll bring industry into it."

Gronda's personal time and expense is the in-kind exchange the town is giving for the grant. He does not get paid for any of the work he does on the project.

The airport is in Phase I of its planning stage. Wind and various other studies have already been completed; however, soil testing studies still need to be done.
