NO. 9 Pahrump Senior LL goes to regionals
9 Pahrump Valley's All-Stars, after winning the Nevada Senior Little League baseball title, continued their quest for national honors at the Western Regionals in Salem, Ore., last summer. The West Regionals were played in early August, with Pahrump Valley, in its first-ever regionals trip, joining Southern California, Montana, Washington and Oregon in one pool in the week-long tournament. Hawaii, Alaska, Northern California, Idaho and Arizona were in the other pool. Pahrump finished 1-3 in the tournament. Other regionals were played at West Deptford, N.J.; Blytheville, Ark.; Rabun County, Ga.; Peru, Ill.; Vancouver, B.C., Canada; St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, and Guam. The District 4 champion, Pahrump Valley was managed by Brandon Bietar and coached by Fred Pang, Tim Cazier and Rob McBride. The team advanced to the regionals by winning two of three games against the Central Division in the state championship playoffs at Las Vegas. On the team were Jarret Holley, Cody Nielsen, Ron Torres, Danny Cazier, Kent Jasperson, Tyler Lepley, Michael Gonzalez, Corey Veloz, Dominic Swiden, Ethan Wald and Garrett Darr. In six post-season games prior to the regionals, Veloz led Pahrump Valley in runs batted in with 14; at 13 each were Lepley and Gonzalez. Nielsen has 12, Wald 10, and at nine is Cazier. Lepley batted.708, including .786 in the state tournament. Wald was at .650; Holley .571; Veloz .542; Cazier .438; Nielson .435, and Torres .400. As a team, PV batted a rousing .489; the team hit .509 in the regionals, scoring 47 runs, after batting .465 at state, with 45 runs. Preparations are underway for the 2008 season, with plans to add a Big League team if Pahrump Valley does not field a Silver Division American Legion squad for the third straight year. The Pahrump Little League is adding a fast-pitch softball program in 2008. |
