Pahrump Valley won 38 of 57 matches in the Las Vegas Wrestling Classic at the Convention Center last weekend, competing against some of the best matmen in the western United States.

"There were 75 teams represented at the tournament, with competition in 64-man brackets on 14 mats on the first day," said Craig Rieger, the Trojans' coach. "The days were long ... we started at 10 a.m., Friday and finished around midnight ... on Saturday, we were back there at 10 a.m. and went until 8:30 p.m.

"Most of the (out-of-state) teams were from California and the toughest was Buchanan, from Clovis," said Rieger. "They were a solid team in every weight class. Of the Nevada teams, Cimarron-Memorial, as expected, was strong."

Team scores were kept, but attempts to get them off the Web site (www.trackstats.com) were unsuccessful.

"I'm not sure how we did, but I think we had to be among the top 25," said Rieger. "It was a great tournament ... there were so many good wrestlers and the Convention Center itself was just so big. It was a huge venue. And as usual, Pahrump Valley had a lot of fans there; families, friends, Christmas, Las Vegas ... it was great."

How the Trojans fared:

103 pounds -- Elliott Owens (19-5 this season) was 0-2 in the first round, then went 3-0 to win his weight class in the Hard Luck Tournament (for wrestlers who were 0-2 on the first day);

112 -- Elias Armendariz (26-3) was 5-2, losing in the semifinals and in a match for third place.

119 -- Josh Armendariz (14-8) was 3-2.

140 -- Kyle Abreu (16-12) was 2-2.

145 -- James Chapman (25-4) won six of eight matches, but did not place. He was a No. 1 seed in his weight class.

160 -- Ande Floyd (17-7) was 0-2 on the first day, then won three of four matches on Saturday to finish second.

171 -- Zach Weldon (28-2) was 6-1, advancing to the semifinals before losing. He won in the consolation semifinals in three overtime periods and he earned a third-place finish by winning in double OT.

189 -- Joe Colucci (16-10) was 2-2.

215 -- Pierce Henkel (22-5) was 2-2, with both setbacks coming in tough matches, according to Rieger.

289 -- Frank Lopez (26-3) was 6-1, losing in the semifinals, then going 2-0 in two overtime consolation rounds to finish third.

Pahrump Valley wrestles in the Basic Duals at Henderson Friday and at the Marty Taggart Invitational at Overton Moapa Valley Saturday.

The Trojans have Southern Nevada Class 3-A League duals Jan. 9 at Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, before they travel to Spring Creek to compete in the Kiwanis Invitational Jan. 11-12. Pahrump Valley is in the Mohave Invitational at Bullhead City, Ariz., Jan. 18-19.
