Trees... hoops... other stuff ...

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, y'all.

The next time this space will be filled, it will be January 2008.

So, in the meantime, remember that Pahrump Valley High School's athletics department is selling Christmas trees at the Wulfy's parking lot on Highway 160 ... Proceeds will help the school fund its athletics programs.

And another reminder ... Pahrump Valley's girls and boys basketball teams will be in the Ninth Grade Academy gym today to play perennial Class A title threat Pahranagat Valley Alamo. The varsity twin bill begins at 6 p.m.

Alamo's girls, coached by the eminently successful Amy Huntsman, are 6-2 this season, with their losses to 3-A Yerington (54-50) and 2-A Battle Mountain (52-24) ... The Alamo boys, directed by Brian Higbee, are 5-1; their loss was 71-60 to Lincoln County -- expected to be a prime contender for the state 2-A title ... The Panthers defeated 2-A The Meadows 67-61 earlier this month.

Coach Bob Hopkins' Pahrump Valley's girls are 11-1, with their loss a 43-38 setback inflicted 11 days ago by Class 4-A Las Vegas Cheyenne ... The Lonnie Shereck-coached PV boys are 8-4, including two losses to 1-A power Lake Mead Christian Academy and one to defending state 1-A champion Las Vegas Trinity.

One can only hope that the twin bill tonight is the last time the Trojans will play in the antiquated Academy gym ... Work on reconstructing the PVHS main gym is progressing; whether it will be ready by Jan. 5, when the Lady Trojans are scheduled to play Hurricane, Utah, is of major concern.

Pahrump Valley's first Southern Nevada Class 3-A League doubleheader is Jan. 19, against Boulder City ... A league twin bill against Faith Lutheran, scheduled for Jan. 8, has been switched to the Crusaders' gym ... Faith is now supposed to play at PVHS Jan. 25.

In regards to facilities, the Nye County School District board would serve Pahrump in particular, the county in general, by building a multi-purpose building that could be used by not only for athletics, but for other community events.

What would be cool is to have a facility like the Trent Arena in Kettering, Ohio (www.trentarena.com) on the second high school campus.

Facts and stuff from the notebook ...

The Pahrump Valley varsity football coaching job has been re-posted by the Nye County School District; it will remain open until further notice ...

Willow Creek is talking about building a hotel and casino on the property that includes the golf course and in its general vicinity a Utilities Inc. facility, which is directly across the street from Pahrump Valley High School ... We have to wonder if the developers are planning to improve the infrastructure, including building sidewalks and widening major streets in the area (Calvada, Blagg, Mt. Charleston and Red Butte, in particular) ... I have a legitimate concern; I live a chip shot away from the club house.
