Pahrump Valley and Pahranagat Valley Alamo -- two of Nevada's perennially strong girls' basketball teams -- clash Friday night in the Trojans' gym.

And this storied rivalry between the Class 3-A Trojans and 1-A Panthers will have an added attraction -- the first showdown between the Trojan and Panther boys' teams in Pahrump in several years.

The varsity doubleheader begins at 6 p.m. in the Ninth Grade Academy gym. Work on replacing the water-damaged high school gym is progressing at a reasonable pace and should be completed by early to mid-January.

Pahrump Valley's girls and boys go at future Class 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division rival Las Vegas Clark Saturday, with the varsity twin bill beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The boys, coached by Lonnie Shereck, and girls, directed by Bob Hopkins, are coming off losses.

PV's boys fell 68-54 at Las Vegas Trinity -- Nevada's defending state Class A champion -- Friday. The Thunder broke away from a 14-14 first-quarter tie to take a 34-31 halftime lead, then outscored the Trojans 34-23 down the stretch.

Daveron Ross and Raphael Roberts scored 16 points each for the Thunder. Darius Dolly had 20 points for Pahrump Valley.

The girls lost 43-38 at Las Vegas Cheyenne Dec. 10 and have been idle since. That setback ended an 11-game unbeaten streak by the Trojans.

Pahrump Valley was held to 17 points below its season average by the Desert Shields.

The Trojans have been an inside-oriented team this season, with their top three scorers and rebounders post players. Senior Megan Meads is averaging 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds; junior Kristi Daffer is at 9.2 points and 6.3 rebounds, and freshman Casey Scheller is at 6.2 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Senior guards Brittany Orr (5.7 points, 2.2 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 1.6 steals) and Brittney Lindgren (5.8 points, 3.2 assists, 2.5 steals, 2.2 rebounds) pace the backcourt group. Freshmen Alyson Kunzi and Ashley Lindgren are combining for 4.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3,2 assists and 2.6 steals per game.
