Class A Las Vegas Mountain View Christian, which last week edged Faith Lutheran 51-50, stopped Mesquite Virgin Valley's unbeaten streak at eight games Monday, prevailing 56-47 in girls' high school basketball.

Randall Van Kampen scored 24 points for the Saints, who trailed 15-12 after one quarter, but took charge in the second to jump ahead at the break.

Courtney Spawn, a senior guard, scored 19 points and 6-foot-2 freshman forward Rachel Morris added 16 for Virgin Valley.

Virgin Valley had won the Mesquite-based Cactus Classic title, as part of the unbeaten streak. The Brent Leavitt-coached Bulldogs defeated Southern Nevada Class 3-A League rival Overton Moapa Valley 43-25 in the finals, following wins against Panguitch, Utah (38-34 and 39-36 in overtime) and El Capitan, Ariz., 56-38.

Morris, who was on the Virgin Valley volleyball team that defeated Pahrump Valley 3-2 to end an eight-year, 54-match league losing streak this past season, was the star player against Moapa Valley.

Morris had 10 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocked shots after getting nine rebounds and six blocks in a semifinal win against Panguitch, a perennial Utah Class A power.

Another freshman, guard Madison Bowler, is in the Virgin Valley lineup. She had 10 points against Moapa Valley and was a defensive standout in the semis' win against Panguitch.

In boys' basketball Monday, Virgin Valley outran Mountain View Christian 66-52 to push its record to 8-4.

One of Virgin Valley's wins this season was against Las Vegas Trinity Christian, the 2007 Nevada Class A champion. The Bulldogs edged the Thunder 50-48 Dec. 11, less than 72 hours after they had lost 52-38 to the Thunder in the finals of the Cactus Classic. Trinity defeated visiting Pahrump Valley 68-54 Friday.

One of the Bulldogs' standouts was Anthony Morris, a 6-6 center and the brother of Rachel Morris.
