Fernley plays unique hoops doubleheader

In the world of rural Nevada pre-conference season basketball it's not unusual to find teams playing two games in one day. But usually, at least, both games are played in the same location, or at least the same town or county.

The Fernley Vaqueros, however, added a twist to that format Friday.

After Douglas coach Corey Thacker had a team pullout of the Carson Valley Classic in Minden on Wednesday, he was scrambling to find a team to fill the bracket.

Fernley accepted the open invite for the start of Thursday's opening round, but there was just one problem with the second day -- the Vaqueros already had a home game scheduled with Pyramid Lake Friday night.

The Vaqueros did play both games Friday, despite the fact that it's just about 120 miles round trip between Fernley and Minden.

Class 4-A Churchill County Fallon handed North 3-A Fernley a 57-36 defeat; following the game, headed back to Fernley for a 7 p.m. game with Class A Pyramid Lake.

The Vaqueros outscored the Lakers 41-30 in the second half for a 73-62 win.
