Lake Mead beats two state champs -- back-to-backNEVPREP.COM
Lake Mead Christian Academy defeated Nevada Class 3-A boys basketball champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran 89-69 Monday. The next night, the Eagles stunned 2-A champion Las Vegas The Meadows 86-64 to run their record to 10-0 this season. The games were the second and third of 17 straight the Eagles will play on the road. Faith Lutheran's Crusaders, who returned to Las Vegas around 2 a.m. Sunday after a 400-plus mile trip from a tournament at Douglas Minden, struggled out of the gate early as Lake Mead jumped to a 14-2 lead early in the first quarter. Faith cut it to a 29-20 deficit at the end of the first, but the Eagles extended their lead to 46-32 at halftime. "Tonight was our first big challenge but I think we caught them at a good time," said Lake Mead coach Jeff Newton in reference to Faith's lack of turnaround time following its trip north. "I think they were a little tired." While he didn't use it as an excuse, Faith coach Brett Walter conceded that the Crusaders early game troubles might have had something to do with their recent long trip. "They were the aggressors for sure," said Walter. "They got the rebounds, they got the loose balls. We didn't do a good job of coming to the ball against their pressure. Lake Mead's Landon Littlefield led all scorers with 33 and Diontea Wright had 23 to lead Faith Lutheran. The Eagles also got 18 from Jeffrey Newton, 11 points and 12 rebounds from Demetrius Turner, 12 points from DeQuan Thompson and 10 from Jared Dean. Faith also got 13 points from Brett Lubbe and 12 from Connor Maloney. Against The Meadows, Littlefield scored 29 points, with Dean adding 17 for the Eagles, who led 22-21, 46-40 and 60-54 at the quarters. Faith Lutheran defeated 4-A Las Vegas Vo-Tech 70-55 Tuesday The Tech girls stopped Faith Lutheran 58-45. |
